Set up a revocable trust rather than a will that will have to go through probate and could easily be contested. This is the easiest way to ensure that your wishes are followed. Talk to an attorney about estate planning.

There won't be any potential contest - I don't have anyone to provide for, other than my pets. I don't really know what "estate planning" means? We're not talking big money here.
  • When my son graduated high school, he received a scholarship (after writing an essay) from a lady who left her money to the school. The way she set it up, all the interest earned on an investment went to provide the scholarship, that way it went on and on and several kids benefited. She specifically set it up that it should go to a technical college student. So you could make yours available to students that study something close to your heart. He received $1500 and it was really helpful.

That's a good idea. I won a few prizes when at school (small ones) and they were very motivational.

Well I'll have pets so its probably all going to my doggies :]

If I have no one it'll go to Best Friends or the ASPCA to help rescue other doggies!

I've made damn sure that the dog and the cat (both rescued) are provided for - top of my list, as always

That covers my suggestion... Once I heard of a Millionaire lady who left all to her dog... And she needed to have someone in mind to take care of her dog... And I thought, that would be the best job for me. Being that I know what its like to say my children are my dogs.... I have many years experience with doggie childcare.. Both for my sisters many many pugs.... And my own dogs. Which right now I have two pomeranian children.. I never did the human children route yet.. Don't know if that will happen in my lifetime. But I do know someday (maybe soon) it will be time to write mine, and I wonder the same thing you are.

I would set up a scholarship program and set up guidelines for who should receive the scholarship.

There isn't really the the equivalent of scholarship in the UK...

If you donate it to a church, I don't think they take any as overhead.

No doubt... I'm not much of a god-botherer though; and think as long as religion leaves me alone I'm happy for it to carry on, for those who find comfort in it. No legacies in my will, for any religious institution of whatever persuasion.

I'd say take the money, hide it somewhere secluded, and give three different families a treasure map.

The treasure map would be SO FUN!
Along the lines of my previous idea, if you have friends who wouldn't make it or the like, make a list NOW of friends now who you deem "worthy" of being in the drawing for the prizes. Keep it someplace safe with your executor also having a copy or let her/him know where it will be kept at all times. If someone ticks you off, you lose touch, etc, then cross their name off or add new friends as you go through life. No matter where they live, they will be in the drawings. Then just decide what the prizes will be. I personally cannot think of a better way to remember someone near and dear to me than to be given a gift of something that THEY enjoyed or cherished.
