Bugs in organic food

I know it comes with the territory of less chemicals, but I have a pretty bad bug phobia.

I know washing is important but still.. just seeing the little buggers will turn me off from eating the food completely.

I hate that I feel like I have to chose between more chemicals, less bugs, or less chemicals, more bugs.

=/

Why does everything have to have a downfall.....!

Where are you buying it? I have problems with bugs on cruciferous veggies from the farmer's market no matter if they're conventional or organic. I only buy them from the grocery store now. Also lettuce and raspberries, but those are cute little bugs and I don't mind washing them off.

Personally, I go with chemicals. It's cheaper. Hasn't hurt me or my family yet.

There are bugs on the veggies I buy, organic or not. I've bought lettuce at Wal-Mart and found dead bugs between the leaves. Now if the bugs are in packaged food....then ewww!
  • I buy organic from Whole Foods Grocery, Trader Joe's, and Fresh Market and have never found bugs in anything.

Never found bugs on the food I bought at Whole Foods. Maybe that's why the spinach says triple washed.

I guess it's just a higher chance of bugs, not guaranteed in all organic, but just more likely. I'm talking little green caterpillar type bugs too...not little fruit flies. Maybe I just have terrible luck.
  • We only ever get them in lettuce, but like you said, wash them. I'll choose washing over chemicals any day of the week.
  • i found a bug in my organic girl salad the other day. Their product is good enough that i still buy it anyway though.

I kind of like seeing bugs in my produce, it means something can live on my food, not die from my food. And I am talking small numbers of bugs ... I've found a caterpillar or two and several aphids over the years.

I'm very anti-chemical, because I do not know what that chemical soup is doing to my body (and my loved one's bodies). I choose organic, and will either wash off or pluck off the little insects and gently release them back to the wild.

My mum used to grow lots of our veggies herself. If she thought there might be bugs, she would rinse them then put them in a sink of cold water with some salt which brings the bugs out of the veggies. Then just rinse and dry them before you put them away and you'll be right.
