Fruit

Opinions please!

I LOVE to eat fruit (regular and dried) but i see so many people saying the sugar is bad.

I personally think fruit sugar is different and therefore it shouldn't be so bad, but what do you think?

I go over on sugar almost every day, and it comes almost exclusively from fruit. I have lost a lot of weight, and my lab work is great! So I don't worry about the sugar as long as it comes from whole, natural foods and not processed stuff like soda and candy. It seems to be working well for me.

I enjoy fruit and have eaten it with my lunch everyday for 4 months. But, I am now going to try and cut down on carbs so I'm replacing lunch fruit with another veggie. It's not bad for you though, and lots of vitamins in fruit and vit C.

To your body, sugar is sugar. Fruit is not bad for you, but if you're trying to lose weight, sugar can hinder that. I love berries and apples. I eat more sugary fruits (bananas, peaches) only a few time per week. Bananas were harder to scale back on than baked goods!

I find myself wanting more sugary foods if I eat a lot of fruit. So I limit my fruits to 2-3 a day. If I have a banana for instance I try hard to follow it with protein. I stick with apples, peaches, nectarines, seedless grapes, oranges, pears. Melons and plums occasionally. Berries in season due to price. I add fresh fruit to yogurt. I have apples with peanut butter. I have cheese with pears or nectarines. I match up the fruit rather than have it alone. For me it works that way.

There's not one sugar that's better for you than the other. That being said, the positives of fruit (in terms of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins) far outweighs the negatives of the sugar. That being said, you have to list to your body. For me, I do better eating higher protein and fat items otherwise I'm never satisfied.

My grandmother eats fresh fruit with every meal. She's in her nineties and in great shape! I wouldn't worry about the sugar in it, but do be careful with the dried fruit.

I go over on sugar every single day.
There is a LOT of debate on whether processed sugars are the same as naturally occurring sugars.
If you have no medical reasons why you shouldn't be going over on sugar, then do not give it two thoughts. Eating lots of fruits and vegetables is GOOD for you.
All of the weight I have lost has been lost while ignoring the red negative number next to my sugar intake every day. I eat bananas (some times two a day), grapes, raisins, dates, etc. and it has never stopped my weight loss.

Unless you have an underlying medical condition, just treat it as any other carb - try to hit that macro. Fruit is good for you so you should not be unnecessarily restricting it.

Some scientific theories suggest that fruit is our preferred food. For example, we are closest to chimps genetically and they eat mostly fruit! Lots of good arguments that suggest humans are natural frugivores (fruit eaters).

Here is an interesting link that references the Walker theory:

I can verify the accuracy of these theories, but they make an interesting read.

I eat lots of fruit - apples, melons, oranges, berries. Bananas. And I lose weight just fine despite a higher sugar count. I don't worry about it. I still also eat protein and leafy vegetables too, but I'm no longer of the mindset that I should shun fruit just because of the the sugar.

I eat lots of fruit (and veggies) and I always lose weight and stay healthy. My BP and Cholesterol are low, low, low too. Every person is different. (I can eat salt without adverse effects too.) but unless your doctor tells you otherwise, enjoy your fruit.

(The restriction of my favorite fruits is partially why I can't stay on a low carb diet and won't even try. I can't go a single day without fruit -- lots of it.)
