What to do

Well, tomorrow is our first day back at the gym after a break to deal with end of summer trips and back to school. My 9 yo daughter is doing her workout with her neuromotive coach and I have to decide if I will sit and watch or get back to doing crossfit. I am very nervous to rejoin the class. I only did it three times before our break and ended up with a splitting headache (pinched nerve) and puking after the workout the last two times. I was truely exhausted for the better part of the day, but mentally/emotionally it was a huge boost and the next day I felt like I had an energy injection. Also, I was actually warm for the first time ever instead of sitting in my office with my heater on in the middle of August. My chiropractor thinks I should be OK with the pinched nerve now and I have been drinking my water religiously since some of the headache may have been due to dehydration.

My husband doesn't want me to do Crossfit right now. He is concerned that I'm pushing too hard and suggested waiting until I am more fit to start. Work my way up so to speak. He thinks I should continue with walking/biking every day and keep going to Curves (unfortunately the hours don't really work very well for me and I've not gone for months). We have lots of weights at home and he has all the required knowledge to show me how to use them and coach me through, but by the end of the day his motivation to work out is gone and I don't have the energy to motivate him and me.

Of course, I could just go for a nice long walk and not sit around and feel like a lazy person watching everone else sweating away.
So I'm soliciting opinions from you guys/gals.

  • The first step it to do something, whether it's curves, crossfit, walking, or lifting weights. You have to make up in your mind that you want to do something and do it. If your doctor says it's ok for you to do crossfit, go for it. I'm a firm believer in pushing yourself to the limit. I love watching the biggest loser and they don't ever start off slow, they go head first. So if I was you I would go all out. If you want the weight gone you will put in the work to get it off. You know your body though and when it says give you should give, but at the same time don't use that as a crutch!!! Good luck to you in whatever you decide to do. If you need someone to push you I'm the one.

I am not a big fan of puking after a workout! I'm not familiar with Crossfit, but just looked it up. It sounds grueling; is there a way to go at your own pace? I think if you could push yourself, but not injure or traumatize yourself, you would get that same benefit (energy, positivity) Could your husband outline some exercises for you? That way, if he doesn't feel like taking you through your workout you could refer to the outline. Everything hurts at the beginning, you didn't mention how long you've been exercising or what you've done in the past. If you are just beginning, the Crossfit may not be the place to start.

I know walking can feel like nothing. Can you add 60 seconds of jogging, just to get the old heart rate up? Look up Couch to 5k...it's a great way to gently break into running. My recommendation though is to go slow and do some weeks a few times if needed.

Good luck! If you can afford a personal trainer for a few sessions, too, that would help you!

Thanks for your replies. I am also not a fan of puking, but will put up with it if I know it isn't hurting me and will stop happening sooner rather than later. Before this point I was pretty sedentary and yes, Crossfit is pretty gruelling.

Problem solved! It appears that there is absolutely no way I can work out in the morning, the schedule is just too tight with dropping kids off at Daycare and my husband at work. It looks like I will have my other two kids with me in the morning otherwise it is a ridiculous four times across town drive.
