strength training...how often and how long?

I was wondering how often and how long i should be doing strength training...i workout 3 times a week for 30 minutes right now. But the strength training part has always confused me. any help is appreciated.

    It depends on the program you're doing. One common recommendation for beginner/novice trainees would be a full body program done 3 times per week. Full body would mean that the program has you lifting with your entire body (all major muscle groups). I would recommend keeping your sessions somewhere around the 40-60m mark.

    Full body programs would require you to rest (no lifting) in between lifting days.

    This, and Starting Strength...i found it easier to follow and the workouts are simple and straight forward.

    Thanks! i am not doing any kind of program really, i just have dumb bells to use, i do have EA sports active 2 for the Wii so i guess i could start with that and program a full body routine.

    Sidesteal always steals my answers!! What he said. 2 other begginer programs are Starting Strength as someone else mentioned and Stronglifts 5x5. I thought Starting Strength was the most straightforward of the bunch.
