Why am I getting so hungry ?????

I've been on this journey for 5 1/2 months now and I'm very pleased with the results. I've noticed though that for the last 2 weeks, I'm becoming very hungry during the day. My weight loss has slowed down, but I'm thinking it's still at an acceptable rate. Could my metabolism be changing? I have the added complication of having my thyroid removed 3 years ago, so although I'm on thyroid replacement meds it still can make the "balancing act" a little complicated. My diary is open if anyone wants to take a look and give me your thoughts. Thanks.

I just looked at a few days worth of your diary.

You are eating a lot of fruit and carbs. All healthy stuff, but it is exactly the kind of food that will make you hungry. You eat white rice or bread or watermelon and your blood sugar shoots up (those are high glycemic index foods). Your insulin spikes and stores that sugar in your cells as fat to lower your blood sugar. There is now too little sugar in your blood stream to maintain normal activity, and you get hungry.

As you get thinner, there is less easily accessible fat to burn for the calories you need. For me, I think of it as 'bounce' in my system.

Try harder to digest carbs like brown rice or wheat or rolled oats. Drop down your bread and definitely drop down things that are sugary like fruit. 40% of calories from carbs should be help and be more maintainable (I have a hard time getting all the way down there every day, but have moved to around 45%).

    See if that helps.

You may not be eating enough. As you get closer to your goal, the more you need to eat (see below). Now it might be tricky as you don't have you thyroid anymore. The one suggestion I would make is replace some of your carbs with high protein meals. This will improve satiety and will help preserve your lean body mass. Also, if you aren't doing heavy weight training, you should start.

If you have 75+ lbs to lose 2 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 40-75 lbs to lose 1.5 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 25-40 lbs to lose 1 lbs/week is ideal,
If you have 15 -25 lbs to lose 0.5 to 1.0 lbs/week is ideal, and
If you have less than 15 lbs to lose 0.5 lbs/week is ideal.

Bump! Thank you for the question gonnadoit2010! I've been wondering the same thing. Plus I think the info above will help me with better food choices and jump start weight loss again. I've been dong this journey for nearly 2 years and have lost all sense of accomplishment.

I love my whole grain, old fashioned oatmeal for breakfast. However, after some research, I have started eating mainly protein for breakfast - 4 egg whites scrambled with veggies, or a cup of 1% cottage cheese and melon and I have found that I am less hungry throughout the day. It has helped with those hunger pains. good luck

I like oatmeal a lot too. My husband eats oatmeal every day. But when I eat it I get hungry. Mixing muesli (slower to digest) and yoghurt makes me much less hungry. It always surprises me that a big breakfast like oatmeal or waffles or pancakes makes me really hungry by 11. It's the carbs.
