Weight lifting?

I've started the gym recently and doing exercise at home and spinning classes twice a week. But an exercise regime needs more than cardio, i was just wondering because i want to tone up, how to add weights into it? But i don't even have the slightest clue on what to use or what to do? Anyone have any ideas? Or invest in a personal trainer for a hour or two, to get the grip of things?
