My dr. told me I need to get down to my ideal weight for my height which is 126lbs for 5'2". I have the beginnings of a tumour forming on the bottom of my right foot (Morton's Neuroma) and he said that if I didn't work on losing the weight a.s.a.p. I may end up with surgery. So I'm looking to lose 30lbs. He said I should try to lose about 3-4 lbs a week to get the weight off quickly, but I'm trying to figure out how I can do this safely. I'm trying to keep around 1000 cals a day and do try to exercise at least an hour a day. So, I just wanted to see what the community thought about my situation. Thanks in advance for any input :-)

First, I would get a new Dr! Are you only 30 lbs. overweight? I can't imagine any Dr recommending 3 to 4 lbs. weight loss a week for someone with that little to lose. And, in my quick google search of your condition, I didn't see weight mentioned as a possible cause or weightloss as a possible solution!

I would stick with shooting for about a pound to 1.5 lbs a week for you. Eat around 1200 to 1400 calories per day. I assume exercise would be difficult with your condition, but perhaps cycling would be OK?
  • I agree about another Dr and 2nd opinion. I can't see a qualified Dr telling you to lose pounds unsafely to take care of another issue your having. It doesn't make sense. Dr's like that scare me! Did he give you guidelines, direction and is he monitoring you very carefully? If you are uncertain about him and his advice, I still suggest another opinion.

@omma - she didn't say she was 30 lbs overweight, her Dr said she needed to lose 30 lbs quickly. Docs typicially do this to get a patient into a safer weight zone, but they are still overweight.

to the OP, If your doctor wants you to lose 3-4 lbs/wk, he needs to be putting you on a program of some sort and monitoring you. It is somewhat irresponsible for him to give you a directive like that and not make sure you are getting medical guidance during the process. From that standpoint, maybe a 2nd opinion (and doctor) are in order.

Also, I wish you the best, but I don't think anyone on here is qualified to give you internet advice on how to lose weight at that rate safely. That needs to be from someone you are standing in front of and seeing regularly

No she didn't say that, but she stated her Dr wanted her to get down to 126 SO she needs to lose 30 lbs. Which implies that's all she has to lose. That may not be correct, but that was the implication which is why I asked the question.

And then I read her profile: " I'm at 162lb now, so got 36lbs to lose"

So yes, I think her Dr is being very irresponsible, especially considering the NIH website didn't mention weight as a cause of this particular condition.

my mistake... good catch. Yes, sounds fishy.
  • Thanks for the input. I had already planned on talking to my primary care doctor on Monday about my situation. It was the nerve dr that said I needed to take off the weight. Main reason he said that is because I am putting extra pressure on the nerve with the extra weight and 2 of my toes have been numb for quite sometime. But I thought he was being a little drastic with the 800 cal a day diet, that is why I posted. If anything, he got me exercising and watching my food so it all turned out good. Plus I found this wonderful site :-)
