I get called Ginger all the time. I've embraced it haha. I actually take it as a nickname :)
That's why my username is 'gingerjen'. Not because of my red hair, though. This sweet little old lady would consistently mishear my name and think I was saying "Ginger" so that's what she called me.

I think I was 10 when my neighbour decided to set nicknames for us all. And as ginger rhymes with minger, that was my nickname from then on. School was a similar trial. There's nowt wrong with ginger but a hell of a lot wrong when it's being used as yet another way to bully you.

I don't mind it so much now, but when you're 14 and are seriously questioning why you have rules about not being violent... As I understand it also, being red headed in the States doesn't hold nearly the same stigma as in the UK.
I was being facetious because my username is gingerjen.
  • Same thing happens to me. I dyed my hair a medium auburn a YEAR ago and now every time I dye it brown you can still see the red peeking through. Even when I use "unred" in my hair dye. :P Really annoying.

I think it will look beautiful.

    What color are your eyes?

    I have blue eyes.

And I guess I take it back - my natural hair color is dirty blonde with red tones in it. Luckily, I have natural lowlights/highlights.

Profile picture isn't my natural hair.

*Warning: the following pics are from when I was like 12-13, so don't judge :p lol

This is my natural hair color:

and this is my hair color when I colored it auburn. I wanted darker but now looking back this might be dark enough

Do it! I get so, SO many compliments on my dang $2 hair color. It's Revlon Colorsilk medium auburn. It doesn't look fakey. Pretty awesome.

Even Rachel Wood in True Blood! You look a LOT like her!
    That auburn is beautiful!

Didn't know who that woman was, so I googled her. Hot diggity dog - I take that as probably one of the best compliments...ever! haha Thank you !

Fair skin, blue eyes, and based on your pic, I believe you would be better suited with a red-gold base color. Auburn is a brown base, and will not look natural on you. But a strawberry blonde (a la Nicole Kidman or Julianna Moore) would be very flattering. Take it from a true redhead =)

Anything with red fades quickly. Just so you know! And it's a ***** to get out of your hair if/when you want to re-dye it. At any rate, if you want to do it, go for it! It's a nice color if you keep up with it =)

i do/did hair professionally, i will NEVER go dark again.

i have lost so much hair, and compromised its integrity haha

if its something you wanna stick with, go for it, but if you think you will change your mind anytime soon i wouldnt suggest it..

also only go 2-3 shades darker so you dont get that hollow look.

I go from bright reds to medium auburns to dark auburns to brassy fadeouts and have gone back to my natural (dark ash blonde). I get compliments on all of it but the only time people think I've been dying my hair was when it was my natural color.
Right now it's a very faded out bright red with over an inch of roots and people still compliment my hair color. o_O
I have boxes at the ready but I've been so lazy with it. :)

Yeah, I hear ya. Dyed dark once and I had to dye my hair like 4 times before I finally got it out. My hair is actually still really healthy surprisingly. And my hairdresser is a genius.

Wow. I died my hair from blonde/ginger to auburn (for about 2 years) and my hairdresser said that Tinting was conditioning for hair and very healthy. Would you not recommend this??

My hairdresser said the same. But dying it lighter is bad because you're bleaching. That's when it gets all dried out and brittle.

going darker is just depositing on top of what you have, going lighter is stripping color out of your hair cuticle.

any color process is "bad" for your hair since there is ammonia in developer, it also depends on your hair type.
