Hi SAHMS!! This is our last week of the year--let's end it with a BANG!
Drink lots of water, eat good for you foods, exercise (if that's part of your plan) and be merry! :drinker:

Think about/write down all that you have accomplished this year. did you put together that photo album? did you try a new recipe? did you try a new exercise? did you love up your kids more? did you yell less? Take the time to reflect on all that you have achieved in 2009. Feel good about yourself!!

We are a informal, open group with loads of support, understanding and encouragement. No official weigh-in's etc. Come join the conversation! :flowerforyou:

    My goals this week
    *drink and track my water
*eat healthy meals w/o the junk. (can have treats on new year's eve OR day)
    *follow exercise plan
    *do my reflections and resolutions

I'm trying to keep the week full so that it's manageable with the 3 kids. This AM we're going bowling. This afternoon--oldest needs to do reading, math, singing and shower. Middle will do some "school." And baby will nap?? I will exercise and make sweet and sour meatballs. wish me luck!

Hi, Stacyw37 & SAHMS! I'm new to MFP and would love to be a part of your group.

I stay home (obviously) and homeschool my 8 kiddos (4 girls, 4 boys), ages 20 months to 15. I've always been pretty sedentary, preferring reading, sewing, embroidery to anything that requires breaking a sweat. I hope to change that (at least a little) and lose this 45 pound cushion I'm carrying around. I need to be able to chase my little ones around without getting completely winded!

I'm looking forward to getting to know you, and wish you all the very best in this last week of 2009!

Good morning. Woohoo last week! I think your idea of reflecting on the last year's accomplishments is GREAT! I think I would have to say my accomplishments have been many when I look at it that way. My infant has grown into a thriving toddler, I do yell less, I pulled off 2 successful bday parties including DVD slideshows pics of my kids, I was reconciled my marriage, I started therapy and am finding a more confident and happy me, and I started getting HEALTHY, something I had no real clue of how to do prior to this year.

Also, good news to report. I maintained my weight through Christmas, and actually LOST an additional 2.5 inches overall, 1.25 from my waist! I knew my jeans seemed a little looser... AND over the last 3 days I did my extra exercise to burn those 750 cals I went over on Christmas! With my new Wii Fit Plus it actually seemed easy. I was burning about 500 cals each day/ 2 hours/day.

I just wanted to share a couple of links from my parenting mag. They are supposed to help a new mom lose weight, but I think the food group checklist, and portion size examples are good for anyone recording.
    http://www.parenting.com/article/Mom/Health--Fitness/The-Hungry-New-Moms-Diet-Plan
    http://www.parenting.com/gallery/Mom/Food-Portions-and-Serving-Sizes/2/

I also wonder what everyone's goals are for 2010, whether weight related or otherwise?
Mine are to get a job, always strive to be a BETTER mother, learn more ways to eat healthier-and get a full-body physical at the dr. something I haven't done since I was 18, and try to have a more positive outlook.

Welcome aboard, clcrawley! My sister in law did the 8 kids homeschooled thing, so I can understand what you go through every day and have a lot of respect!

My goal for the week: drop down to 228. I'm at 232 right now b/c of AF who decided to show up on Sunday. Honestly, after all that whining, she shows up the last day. Gah!

Good luck eating healthy & chug-a-lugging aqua, girls! :)

Hello everyone, i'm glad christmas is over and done. I'm always glad to enjoy the holidays and spend time with family but i'm glad when it comes time to pack it up and anticipate next year.
I as well like your reflecting idea stacey, I need to keep your handy LOL your always full of great ideas
I have no idea how well i'm doing it's one of those things I know i haven't eaten badly but I've had a lot of sodium filled food so I'm almost feeling like there is no point to getting on the scale I know the # won't be accurate. So my goal today is to drink as much water as possible Drborkbork is my motivation chug a lug girlfriend!!

I need some ideas of cheap food ideas for me and my family that don't involve a TON of sodium. That's been my personal challenge lately, all the cheap meal ideas are exploding with salt. I can mix and match things pretty well but i'm getting bored with the same foods that I buy. I have hamburger out for dinner tonight, and I also soaked pinto beans to maybe make refried beans but now I'm drawing a blank?

    Gm Everyone!

Shera- Why don't you brown teh meat, drain it, and then cut up some onions, carrots, whatever you have on hand, and throw it back in the pan with some spices and either water or I sometimes use red wine vinegar, and let it sautee until the veggies are crunchy. I either put that over rice or noodles. It's easy and the fam loves it! Maybe sprinkle a little cheese over it, since it may be a little bland because of the no salt.

Shera, I have a couple really easy, healthy recipes if you're interested-- stir fry, sweet & sour, homemade pizza, veggie chili. All of them will feed your family for less than $15.
  • Shera, I have a couple really easy, healthy recipes if you're interested-- stir fry, sweet & sour, homemade pizza, veggie chili. All of them will feed your family for less than $15.

Trish, I am interested!!!! Please post your recipes! I think that is one of the best and worst things about being a SAHM. You can choose what to make and make it healthy but a lot of the time I don't WANT to choose. It is so much easier to just float along and not care. So I challenge all of you to CARE this week and all year.

Shera I am with you about wanting some cheap meals. Money isn't tight right now for our family but I don't want to be used to spending a lot if that situation should ever arise. Right now I am thankful that I can buy fresh vegies and fruit & not cringe! One meal we do a lot for lunch that my kids can make & it is cheap is Broccoli Cheese Potatoes. We put the potatoes wrapped in foil in the oven on 300 after b'fast so they are done by lunch time. Then I steam some broccoli & shred some cheddar cheese(or open a box of Green Giant frozen broccoli & cheddar cheese). With a salad this makes a pretty healthy filling meal for us. HTH

Welcome clcrawley!!! I am a HS mom also--only 4 kids(18 to 7 yrs here). I haven't been with this group long but they are VERY encouraging. Let us know what your goals are & how you are doing.

I am sooooo excited today. After a three week derailment with my house & regular life I think we gained some ground today. The piles are smaller & most of the Christmas gifts are put away. Next the decorations--a little at a time. Any one else a Flybaby here? If not check out http://flylady.net/--she is a great help!

Oh and I have gotten to walk 3 days in a row!!!!!! Once school starts back up next week I am afraid that I won't be able to do as much. ARG--love those kids but they take so much time. :)

    Have a great day!

    listplanit.com

that is my new fave spot! i've been using tons of the lists already and feel like things are getting organized. or at least the scraps of paper.

also, bhg.com you can get to various links for healthy recipes and more.

kim, i'm glad you're finding this thread helpful. and shera, you say the nicest things :blushing:

there's also allrecipes.com, it has nutritional info with the recipes.
    bettycrocker.com & kraftfoods.com are good sites too.

We have a giant calendar in our kitchen/hall that has all the meals written for the pay period (2 week span). When we go grocery shopping on the Saturday after payday, we get all the stuff we need for each day. I will split the list into 2 weeks. The 2nd week is just the fresh stuff for that 2nd week. This calendar has helped tremendously in our eating out. We used to eat out 2-3 times a week. Now we barely go out 1-2 times a month. The calendar takes all the guess work out of what to cook each night, and dramatically reduces the temptation to eat out.

Anyway, here are a few of my recipes:

    STIR FRY:

    Ingredients
1-2 lbs chicken or pork (depending on how big your family is, 1 lb will feed 4 people)
1 bag frozen stir fry veggies (your grocery store and/or walmart will have all different kinds, which is awesome)
Instant Rice (make as much as your family would want. It is a very low sodium filler!)
1 bottle duck, plum, or orange sauce. (Can be found in your ethnic aisle at the grocery store)
1/2 cup per person La Choy Crunchy Chow Mein Noodles (optional, but YUM!)

Chop critter & toss in pan with some olive oil until cooked through. Add veggies & cook as directed. Pour sauce over. Cook rice as directed.
Place rice in bowl, top with critter & veggie mix. Add the crunchy chow mein noodles if desired.
    Total time: 30 mins.

    HARVEST HOME VEGGIE CHILI

    Ingredients
    Veggie chili:

    Ingredients:
rainbow bell peppers (1 red, 1 yellow, 1 orange, 1 green)
    2 zucchini
    1 yellow squash
    4 potatoes
    1 can kidney beans, rinsed
    1 can corn
1 can diced tomatoes (I like to use the cilantro & lime flavor)
1 can Hunts zesty spaghetti sauce

Bring large pot of water to boil. Meanwhile chop/dice/cube/slice potatoes, squash, zucchini, and bell peppers. Throw in pot, add kidney beans. Allow to boil until potatoes are soft. Drain, return to pot. Add corn, diced tomatoes, and sauce, cook until warm. Top with cheddar, sour cream, salsa, and all your favorite chili fixins. Serve with tortilla chips or corn bread. Browned, drained ground beef may be added to recipe if desired.

The prep time on this is killer, because of all the chopping, but once you get it into the pot, it pretty much takes care of itself.

    HOMEMADE SUPREMELY AWESOME PIZZA

You can either buy your crust, or make this low sodium one I found:
    2 t Active dry yeast
    3 1/2 c Bread Flour
    1 1/2 c Water
    2 t Honey
    2 T Olive Oil

Place ingredients in bread machine in order specified by manufacturer and process on dough cycle. Turn out the dough onto a floured board. At this point you may form the pizzas, or refrigerate the dough for several hours, well wrapped in plastic so it won't dry out. (Although a refrigerator rest is not necessary, it makes the dough easier to handle.) Makes enough dough for two 12-inch pizzas, or two 10-inch thick-crust pizzas. Bake at 400 degrees until lightly browned around the edges. Top as desired and return to oven until cheese is melted and crust browned, about 15 minutes total.

Andy won't let me make the crust, so here's what we did with ours:

1 Mama Mary's Thin & Crispy Crust (got ours at walmart)
    1 red bell pepper
    1 green bell pepper
1 can sliced, pitted olives, rinsed
    1 sweet onion
    2 Tomatoes
1 Can Pizza Sauce (also got from Walmart, check labels for lowest sodium one!)
1 pack fresh sliced mushrooms (available in produce dept)
1 bag shredded cheese (also check sodium-- tillamook seems to be the best)
    1 can pineapple

Lay crust on baking sheet. Sauce lightly. Measure 1 cup cheese & sprinkle. Pile up all the yummy things! Sprinkle 1/2 cup cheese on top. Bake as directed on crust package.

Prep time for premade crust: 5 mins
Calorie damage: 700 cals for HALF the pizza! ZOW! Amazing, right? The sodium on this one is a little high, but a real treat. You won't want to get take out again (we sure don't!)
The low sodium crust is higher in cals, but has 25% less sodium.

Remember, you can always tap me for recipe ideas. I'll tell ya what we're having for the week if you want, and give you the recipes. I bet the other SAHMs would like it too ;)

My goals this week are to preplan my day the night before, and be sure to get my water. We are going to have a new year goal setting with the family tonight. I thought it would be fun to set goals for the new year with my kids and husband. We'll see if hubby likes it, he tends to not like the ideas I get excited over. :ohwell:

I got a recipe for macaroni and cottage cheese off of Spark People Recipes today. It looks pretty good, you make the cottage cheese into a sauce and bake everything. I am going to try it for dinner tonight.

Enjoy the last week of 2009, I can't believe that it is! :flowerforyou:

do any of you know what to put in for exercise for the 30 day shred? I got it for Chrsitmas! Yay! I don't know how to count it, and I still haven't found my HRM strap.

30 day shred works as a cross training exercise--I tended to burn 250-300 cals doing it. Good luck, I really enjoyed it!

Stacey, thanks for the website idea, I will go check it out!

I think I ate too much fiber for dinner--I used the high fiber penne noodles I had. I feel really full. But it was tasty!

well, i just STINK. i did ok on my water and food--a little too much but not way over.
    i did NOT exercise!!

i did some fun things with the kids but also a lot of yelling. i swear, i have the most ill-behaved/ignorant kids in the world!! something as simple as bowling and i have to tell the 9 y.o. to sit down when it's not her turn (like every time), and the 5.5 y.o. has to be moved away b/c she can't stop bugging her sister (not to mention throwing her bro's jacket on the ground b/c it's on 'her' chair). i was bowling drill sergeant!!
and the 5.5 y.o has been VERY disobedient/disrespectful!!! she says NO to my 'requests', argues with me--this am it's abt sitting in MY chair for breakfast. i know it's no big deal but when i say no she tries to negotiate. no, not a little lawyer. just a kid who wants her way. many of her barbies and other prized toys have been taken away.
any other suggestions? i send her to her room but that's pretty meaningless too.
and the baby is now screaming and otherwise obnoxious with his sisters' return. ugh!!

sorry--just had to vent. i feel like such an incompetent mommy and mean too.
and that's the start to my day....blech

the plan is to go to the bellagio conservatory today. it's always so beautifully done. :)

I think the hardest thing is to stick with what you say. I have never been good with follow through and my daughter turns into miss negotiator also, I have to remind myself that I am the mommy and what I say is law. I don't always like it though. I understand how you feel, I sometimes feel the same way. My husband has always said that if our kids misbehave they are going to end up with nothing--All they really need is clothes, healthy food, and a place to sleep. All the rest is icing on the cake. I have not had to get to that point yet but it lingers out there. Usually the threat is enough. I send my daughter to the corner--now she will sometimes choose that over the item she wants to avoid (showering, doing work, etc) I just ask as dr phil would, what is the payoff. There is a reason they are doing that, so what is it?

    Good luck!

    Good morning!

Stacey - I understand your problem. Unfortunately, I don't really have any advice, because I'd love some myself. I've taken toys away, tv, play time, etc. Nothing seems to work anymore. The only thing that seems to work with my daughter when she gets upset (term used extremely loosely), is giving her a piece of paper and something to draw with. She loves art. It calms her down. I wish I could remember to do that every time. Of course, would it keep working? Probably not.

Well, I had problems with my scale a couple weeks ago weighing me at many different weights in the span of 3 minutes. I changed the battery and weighed in this morning. 159.4 :noway: :grumble: Not surprised. I'm "starting over" in 2010. I'm not going to go hog wild this week, but I'm not going to work really hard. But my goal is to lose 34.6 lbs in 2010. I got a new exercise dvd. I think part of my problem with exercising has been boredom. I've had the same dvds for many years now. Motivation and will power are at the top of the list. I know exactly what I'm doing wrong. I know exactly what I need to do to lose this weight. Now I just need to get the motivation and will power to DO it.

Here's to the new year! :drinker:

thanks debnu and amy! morning's getting better. two littles watching tv, i cleaned the fishbowl and oldest reading bhg jr cookbook (from library). there's lots in there she's willing to eat. so now that i have a new budget (cash only) for 2010, the kid wants to try out all this stuff! (incl the chocolate pizza and brownies, of course!).
looks like i need to put together a list and a menu for the month and then we'll go to walmart. that's where our groceries are the cheapest.

sooo what are you folks doing new year's eve? if staying home, what are you serving??
we've talked about pizza, maybe a meat/cheese deli tray with fixings? that would last a few days. girls want to bake a cake and blow out candles. and now there's all the delicious treats in the cookbook. ah....
we're also doing keepsake crafts--making the melamine plates (we have the special sheets i bought last year, we decorate and then send order to factory, and then weeks later we get the plates back), golden placemats (which i'll get laminated), visors. i am obsessed with momentos--cuz they grow up just so fast!!

so, what ideas have you tossed around?

and amy--don't be too hard on yourself. you have made efforts this year--your walking for instance. so it's just a matter of incorporating more changes. we'll stick by you!! also, it may take 18mon to reach that goal. just keep that in mind so you don't get discouraged if it takes time...

    check back later

Need to work really hard on getting water down the gullet this week, I've only been drinking 30-60 oz :(

Hi ladies. Just back from busy time out with the kids. Took them to Mc Donald's then did 2 weeks worth of grocery shopping. They remodeled the Walmart I frequent, so this took close to 2 hours and ended with me having to carry a screaming 1 year old who was taking off clothes and shoes and throwing them, madly steering the basket attached to my son (lol) to a checkout and praying that the cashier was fast. She seemed to be a parent, bc she did go through it very quickly and even thought to give 1 yo the little stuffed animal I'd bought (helped for about 30 sec. at least) You know, I can never seem to get both of my kids to be "good" simultaneously... 6 yo was AWESOME helper. Luckily little one fell asleep in car, and my boy helped me put away groceries, so now I'm kicking my feet up, relaxing, and doing some chatting.

Stacey, I have gone back and forth with that kind of attitude with my DS. Something that I started at the beginning of the school year was a reward system. He'd gotten a wallet and money for his bday in Aug. and having spent about half the money he was hesitant to part with the rest. So I started using quarters as a reward system, but if money is tight, you could always use poker chips, print out "coupons" or fake money (maybe with pic of little ones?) Anyway the reward system is as follows. Each time that he would follow directions the FIRST time asked he'd get a quarter, or for bigger chores like folding/putting away laundry or doing dishes he'd earn 2 quarters. Then he could pay 2 quarters for TV time, use a dollar to get a toy at dollar store, or save up and use 10 dollars for Chuck E Cheese, Putt Putt, or bowling. I've been slacking on it cuz I'm so busy with holiday stuff and it really shows... he's been a little monster all week. It seems counterintuitive, because you think "they're acting up, they should be punished" but kids at this age, at least according to my research, respond more to the positive aspect . As we've all seen the yelling goes right over their head (though we feel like if we hammer it in there something will stick) and usually the grounding means they get to stall even longer on their chore. The reward system allows the kids to be productive household members, like kids used to be. And surprisingly this makes them happier. Which reminds me, my little helper deserves his treat for good behavior at the store right about now...

I'm not big on NYE and since my husband will be working, we're not planning anything special. Kids are too young to really enjoy it anyway. If my DH gets home in time, we will prob watch the ball drop on TV and kiss. On New Year's Day it's tradition to eat cabbage for wealth and happiness, and blackeyed peas for luck (we're Irish, it's old traditions that I've followed even though I'm not superstitious). So for lunch I'm making this blackeyed pea skillet dish with green chiles, taco seasoned ground turkey, blackeyed peas, then topped with shredded cheeses. Usually serve with cornbread muffins. For dinner will have braised sausage and cabbage.

Hi ladies! I'm leaving work in just a minute. It takes me longer to finish when the kids are here, but I feel very blessed to have a part-time job where I can bring the kids with me. I'm going to attempt to leave here, go to 2 banks (personal & for the church), get home, wash up last night's snack dishes, and walk to the playground with the kids for a while. I'm hoping to be able to start dinner by 5:30-5:45. Tonight is angel hair pasta w/ marinara sauce & vegetarian Italian sausage and a salad. I'll probably make garlic bread with the regular sandwich bread we already have. It's whole grain, so healthier than regular garlic bread. I'll check in later after the kids are to bed.

Well, my original plan didn't work. Went to the 2 banks, got gas in the car (why can't dh ever leave me w/ a vehicle that isn't on empty?!), and came home. Realized while I was out with the dogs that it is just way too cold to go to the playground right now. I'm going to see about taking them earlier in the day tomorrow instead. We may have changed our dinner plans too. Got the mail & my grandparents sent their gift to us. $50 gift card to Bob Evans. We already have some free kids meal coupons good through the end of Dec., so we'll probably do that tonight instead. Not as healthy, but at least I don't have to cook.

I don't know how I double posted this time. I made sure I only clicked once. And I'm on a different computer now.
