Eating when sick

I've been sick the last couple of days with the seasonal crud going around the office. I find that when I'm sick, I have a lot more cravings for things I don't usually eat, which usually means my body needs something in them. And of course, to make it worse, severe congestion makes exercising pretty difficult to do.

What do you guys do when you are sick eating-wise? I am trying to maintain a healthy diet through this, but seem to be failing. Do any of you just give yourselves a pass when you're sick?

I abide by the BRAT diet: Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, Toast. With lots and lots of fluids.

I stick by that when I'm naseus or having trouble keeping things down, but I'm not this time. I keep craving salty and greasy, and generally those are what I crave when I have a migraine because my body is telling me it NEEDS those things and I feel much better after I eat them. But being sick lasts much longer than a migraine, so I'm unsure if I should throw in the towel for a few days and just eat what my body seems to think it needs or if I should try to be good and log while sick, which is also exhausting to think about.

Everyone's different so do what you need to do... aside from that I used half a box of kleexnex yesterday due to "the crud". It was coming on Tue a.m. and I'm thinking that's why my a.m. run (final week of C25K) was not a good one. Yesterday I cut back the distance on my run (2 instead of 3 mi) and was able to run the whole time! I tucked a tissue in my pocket but didn't need it until after my shower. The rest of the day I felt like I had been hit by a truck but the a.m. run was good :)

    Good luck!

I too crave salty when I'm dealing with a flu or cold type issue. I use low sodium chicken or beef broth and add some pasta, frozen mixed veggies, cut up chicken from a roaster, and then sometimes scramble an egg into it. If I'm really lazy or no energy I use the ramen noodles with only half the seasoning to cut some salt and again drizzlea scrambled egg or two into and let it boil til the egg cooks. These are my go to comfort foods. plus lots and lots of fluids!!

I usually never eat crisps, but when I'm sick I crave them so much! I only have a little portion though and try a healthy alternative, such as toast with peanut butter, almonds, rice cakes..still salty but good for you :)

You guys are so good! I've been trying to moderate, but have only been partially successful (as shows in my diary). I have been stuffing myself with fruit to try and curb the fatty sugar cravings that seem to be even worse than the PMS chocolate cravings. Last night I managed to curb my salty craving with some spicy meditterannean pickles, but this morning I totally gave in to the Chex Mix at a co-worker's desk :(
