would the gym be better or just walking

i dont make it to the gym much if i do i only get there once a day for like half a hour i had gastric bipas so i they said walker is the best thing to do but if i can make it to the gym thats good to i started walking i walk up and down my road once a day and it is like 2 miles i bought a littile thing to tell how far ive walked steps and calaries not shure if its acrate i just need advice
