Weird TOM NSV

I've just re-started MFP and of course the moment I did, along came my TOM. Normally I would let this completely derail me.

Instead of just trying to soldier through, which has totally failed in the past, I let myself have whatever I wanted in moderation.

Smartfood and chocolate are my huge downfalls so I ate Smartfood, but I made myself pour a serving into a small bowl, eat that, and then go back for another if I really wanted it. Normally I would have just eaten the bag *facepalms*

With chocolate, I bought snack-size Hershey's peanut butter cups individually-wrapped and only let myself have one at a time. Normally I would have finished off a family-size bag of M&Ms. *facepalms more*

Whenever I started craving the Smartfood or chocolate, I would remind myself that there was lots in the cupboard, no one else was going to eat it, it would still be there tomorrow, etc.

As a result, I didn't go crazy with junk food even once this TOM. And now I know I'll be able to do really well the rest of the month.

I've also decided to keep the junk food (we're veggie otherwise so it's just a bag of Smartfood and some chocolate) in the house. I think I've spent too long telling myself I had to cut it out for things to work and instead, I need to develop a health-ier relationship with it. One serving a day won't derail my weight loss and it will stop me from perpetuating this horrible "since I have to give this up, I'm going to eat it all and start again tomorrow" cycle where tomorrow never really comes.

Teach me, I want to be like that. Usually I eat everything. I will try the bite sized chocolate thing. :drinker:

I am on the depo shot and never have TOM anymore...yay me. Try it!
  • Exactly. I think it's actually healthier to learn to indulge in moderation than to cut out all high-calorie foods altogether. I used to eat so much chocolate almost mindlessly. For the past two months, I still let myself have some chocolate, but in much smaller amounts and I think it over before I eat it. I've found that there are times that I decide that I actually don't want it and I feel so much better, both physically and emotionally.
Way to go on your NSV

    fantastic job.
I've learned moderation and individual size bags are key to me not going too crazy during mine.

I've always been a firm believer about everything in moderation and not denying cravings. I have seen too many people who go on this or that diet and eliminate "all bad foods" and then just binge themselves to oblivion one day/night because they have been denying.

Usually during my TOM I give into those chocolate cravings. I don't crave chocolate too much otherwise. Although if there is a king sized special dark bar laying around I have been known to finish that in a day or two. ;)
