veggie on diet, more protein maybe?

Hey everybody,

about two weeks ago, I decided that things have to change. So I started logging my food and am quite happy with the results.

The thing is: Years ago, I lost lots of weight with WW (gaining it back and more...), so I'm already experienced in how it should feel and all. Back then I was still eating meat and found when I switched to veggie I just could not stay within the range of my Points. With MFP I haven't really had this problem yet, since it allows eating your exercise cals.

Since I'm lactose-intolerant, I'm not so much into dairy products. Sometimes I eat cheese and eggs, but would rather not increase these amounts. Any suggestions (maybe veggie protein shakes?) on how to improve my protein without overdoing the carbs?

I'd be very grateful if people could just look over my diary and make suggestions. Thanx so much!

Elisabeth

  • Why did you stop eating meat? Could you add it back? A protein shake might be a good addition if your protein is low.

Re-reading your post--what exactly is your question since you haven't run into any problems yet?

I didn't eat meat but I eat fish (daily). I also drink lots of smoothies and add protien powder (26g/scoop) and flax seed ( has protien too) and most days I reach or exceed my protien goal. There are lots of protien rich foods available if your not eating meat, just have to research a little. I recommend max muscle high 5 protien powder, it contains 5 essential protiens.

I was vegetarian for years without knowing a thing about protein!
I am a lacto ovo vegetarian now, but have been vegan and raw vegan in the past.
If you don't want to up the dairy, I suggest beans, nuts and seeds. I eat a lot of beans now, in pretty much EVERYTHING. Pasta, salads, curries, soups... I always find a way to sneak them in :)
Feel free to add me as a friend if you have any questions!

    Thanx for your replies!

I stopped eating meat for several reasons. The main reason was that I couldn't digest is well anymore and didn't like the effects it had on me. More and more the ethical aspect became more important. So, no, adding it back on is defenitely not an option.

You're right, I didn't run into problems yet. But I just wanted to some trouble shooting. I have a feeling I'll get hungrier during the course of the programm and thought maybe that's because of the protein.

So far, I did some research. And the suggested food I found (lentils, beans...) have lots of carbs... So I thought other veggies might have good suggestions :).

I don't eat meat or dairy myself, and I have no problem getting enough protein. Or anything else. You don't need meat to make protein. You don't need diary to make protein. Your body knows what to do with the good foods you eat. Beans and nuts will provide additional protein, if you think you aren't getting enough, assuming you know what "enough" is. I'm not a gym rat, just moderately active, but I get 45-75g of protein a day eating veggies, fruit, beans, nuts and soy. Have you read "Eat to Live" yet? It's perfectly suited to those of us who don't want to get saturated animal fat in our bodies, yet want to live healthy. I highly recommend it.

I was kind of staying away from seeds and nuts, since I thought they add lots of calories, but just a little won't hurt, I guess :).
    Thanx for the tip!

There is nothing wrong with raw veggie carbs and raw fruit carbs and sugar. They're not bad for you. It's the REFINED sugars, PROCESSED carbs that are your enemies. We're talking nutrition here, not calories. Don't get hung up on the calories and carbs. Focus on getting nutritious foods in your body. Good luck in your journey!

Thanx! I'll check out "Eat to live". Haven't heard of it yet. But that's probably because I'm based in Germany.

I second the nuts and seeds suggestions, in small amounts. Try 1/4 cup per meal/snack. You need to incorporate healthy fats into your diet to prolong the feelings of satiety... at least, that's what I've read. Proteins and fats make you feel fuller for longer than carbs, so when you went off of the meat you probably started missing that in your diet.

ETA - more small meals throughout the day is better for you than a few larger ones. Did not look at your diary to check, but it's worth saying here.

Edited one more time to add - quinoa.

yes, thanx. The small meals work great for me.
You're right about the fat and protein. Before I started logging I cooked with lots of olive oil and seeds. So I was kind of on a healthy diet. Just too much and maybe too infrequent.
  • I suggest soy, especially endamame. you can get it frozen and its great on salads, in stir fry, tomato sauce. it goes in anything
