The good news is I don't have a tumor or cancer in my shoulder. Don't have a name for it yet but hopefully I'll be around for a few more years since its nothing terminal.

I do also have some lower back pain that I saw the Doc for today and one thing he's having me do is go to physical therapy and see a nutritionist for weightloss. I told him I had already been doing my own form of weightloss and about this site and he said that's great I may just want to talk to the dieticians and see if I had any questions or maybe if they had anyhting to offer. I figured since it's only going to cost me $6 co-pay then "why not"!

So I also though if you guys have any questions you might want me to ask while I'm there, post them up and I'll put them on a list. I would personally like to have some clarification about the total calories vs. exercise thing, that's a little confusing to me. But if ya'll have any just let me know and I'll post the answers after I see the Doc.

Have a great day!

Great news. I do have a question:

I read once that your body cannot use more than 500 calories at a time (a small meals through out the day person said this), so to limit your meals to fewer than 500 calories. So here is the question: does it matter whether you eat three meals of 600 calories each or 4 meals of 450 and have a 100 calorie snack?

Thanks - great co-pay by the way.

Have a great day! It is great news that you don't have cancer:drinker: The question I have to you after you see your nutrutionist, is I wonder about the calories they set for you. I see where most are set at 1200 and I am set at 1290. It just seems a bit high, and for just about everyone to be set at the same amout of calories, Just been wondering.:flowerforyou:

Thanks for the good wishes! :flowerforyou:

Mary and Karen I'll take your questions with me and will get back to you. It will be after spring break though.

One thing Karen... my claories are set at 1670. I think it depends on body weight and age with a minimum of 1200. I will be sure and get the scoop though!

Hi everybody, I hope Spring Break was good or IS good now for everyone! Mine was a fun experience and very eye opening. Apparently my body has really changed. My first experience of spring break was to leave for the airport in St. Louis. I had pretty much planned to not worry about my diet and just enjoy the week...... so we stopped at mcDonald's for breakfast. I had to give my hashbrowns away!!! They were disgusting!!! I ate poorly for 3 or 4 days and then got SUPER sick... My body revolted and I spent one whole night almost in the potty room! So I proceeded to striaghten up and fly right for the rest of my trip and when I got back home I was down 2 pounds, lol. But I am truly amazed at my body's reactions and how gross the hashbrowns were. I am from the south I was born with bacon grease in my veins! lol

Anyways........ I saw the nutiritionist this week and in response to my(our) questions she had this to say. First of all, she said we are doing fantastic because of the 5% of people who actually keep weight off after losing it, the successful ones are counting calories, not doing things like low-carb, or low-fat etc. so YAY FOR US!!! And thatif you are eating 1600 calories per day (my amount) then you can either have 1600 calories of M&M's or 1600 calories of good food, it really doesn't matter but you sure won't get very many M&M's for 1600 calories! The best way for us to determine how much exercise and calories can vary GREATLY depending on our bodies. Because it can be so different, and she showed me the metabolic tests of several different people and it was ALL OVER THE PLACE, we should have ourselves tested. I am going to the college to have this done Friday. It will cost me $20. For non-students it would be $35. You might want to check into it. I saw one of the reports and it is very detailed as far as how many calories you should be taking in and where your ideal levels are at and your RED zone (the amount of calories you shouldn't go under) etc.

Considering how differnt the reports I saw were, you can't apply a number to everyone. One lady's metabolism was so high that she could eat 3500 calories per day just to maintain. And another young girls metabolism was so slow that she was WAY below normal. So While we are doing a good thing here it would be best to know what YOUR personal metabolism rate is and where your personal calories should fall. Its about a 30 minute test and all you have to do is let them put this machine on you.

    Hope this helps.

Can you tell me a little more about this test you are having done?? You said it's at the college and you live in Illinois so that's not much help to me. Anyway, thank you so much for the tips and I would like to know more about this metabolism test.....please.

I believe you can find a place in your area to have it done. It's simply called Metabolic Assesment and here are some detials about it.

Most people have no idea what their metabolism really is or how it works; and more importantly, that it can be trained to function at a higher level.

Can you answer the following questions?

How much fat do your burn at any given heart rate?

How many calories do you burn in a day?

How efficiently do you burn fat?

How effectively does your body utilize oxygen and process carbon dioxide under stress?

Medical-grade Metabolic Testing to tell you exactly how your metabolism functions at rest and during exercise. First, you must know how YOUR metabolism functions. Once tested, we can create an intelligent protocol to efficiently make exercise more efficient than ever to achieve your fitness or weight management goals. Actually, there are only two tests: the Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) and the Active Metabolic Rate (AMR). Testing your RMR will let you know EXACTLY how many calories you burn a day. A low RMR test score will result in very different recommendations for nutrition and exercises than a high score. The AMR test shows you the heart rate at which you burn the most body fat, and likewise, this determines the program you'll need to increase your overall fuel efficiency, body fat burning and metabolic rate. Both tests simply analyze the air you breathe out. One collects your breath when you are resting comfortably in a chair, the other while you take a walk on a treadmill. Both tests take less than 15 minutes each. These important bio-markers give us an accurate snapshot of your current metabolic rate and cardiovascular abilities.
