Muscle loss?

Will losing weight automatically make you lose muscle? I know you should not just do cardio but lift weights and such but I have a lot of muscle on my legs (I'm a dancer) and my arms and I don't want to lose it just because I lost weight. Also, I heard that eating a lot of protein will help with muscle gain but is it animal protein, protein from veggies, eggs, or some other source?
