so I'm thinking about doing my 1st 5k probably in January or so... right now the most I can run without stopping is 1.4 miles in about 13.01 minutes average pace is 8.51 min x mile considering that I've never run before this is already a big accomplishment but wondering if I need to focus on making the 1.4 mile in shorter time or just slowly trying to go further....

Add some distance first, then worry about speed. I don't know how much you're running now, but I'd slowly - slowly!! - add on miles until you are running at least 15 miles per week. After you've been doing at least 15 miles per week for at least a month, then maybe add in some training more focused on speed.0
