Knee injuries?

Any one else trying to loose weight with a knee injury? What kind of work outs do you do? I have a knee injury and part of the reason I'm trying to loose weight is to relieve some pressure from my bad knee. but I can't do anything high impact for more then a couple minutes. any one else get frustrated with this problem? I constantly have to switch machines which gets kind of annoying when I need to do it every five minutes during a 45 minute workout.

I have something in my right knee--I am about 30 pounds overweight, but if I lose 15 to 20, I'd be very happy.

I have to walk and when I hit the hills, I almost have to change my gait.

I use the elliptical, but I have to either slow it down, lower the resistance and not do the backwards cycle because of my knee.

I feel like losing weight is HUGE, but it is hard to feel like my lungs are ready, but my knee is not!

There are probably lots of other things-swimming would be huge, but I don't have a pool in a nearby gym.
  • Same here swimming feels awesome on my knee but I don't have a pool in my gym either. I have more to loose but I don't think I'm ever going to reach my "ideal" number only because I used to play soccer before hurting my knee so I have a lot of muscle that I haven't lost. Even now people ask me how much I weigh and they don't believe me because I look Ike I weigh less then I do. Which is all fine and dandy but I still don't like the number on the scale. And every time I work out I need to wear this big bulky knee brace to support my knee and I cannot wait for the day where I don't need the brace.

It sounds like you are doing curves circuit training... STOP. STOP THAT! lol... It really does nothing for you except make your maintenance phase , or plateaus harder to bust.
I get knee flair ups from time to time, and stick to no impact work until I can get to a point that using it is less painful. .
Look into low impact cardio. LOTS and LOTS of core work. You can still get really good heart pumping workouts with out activating your large muscle groups.
If you paid up through the year on your gym... get knee braces. the kind with hinges on the side. I found mine t a drug store that had braces. spent about 50$ per brace. ..... It was either $100 for braces, or worry about how much surgery costs. Wear them bilaterally or you will just damage the other knee by favoring.

I've had 5 knee surgeries in my right knee for a completely torn ACL and a destroyed meniscus. I currently have a cadaver meniscus that's on it's way out, so surgery number six is on it's way. My knee hurts all the time, pretty much every day of my life, but I decided that I needed to lose weight anyway. I found that for just about every pound lost, the pain in my knee lessened. After 12 pounds, the pain is still there, but entirely manageable. I work out a lot. I discovered that spin classes are possible, and I love that. It's a great workout that doesn't over tax my knee. Yoga helps with mobility in my knee- I was unable to do a standing quad stretch for years, but when I started doing yoga and also using a TRX system to help stretch, after about 8 weeks I was able to grab my toes and stretch my quads no problem... that was a big victory for me :-)
I also use the elliptical machine and I walk a lot. I bought a pair of Vibram toe shoes, and to my surprise, they actually HELPED my knee. I have better balance in them, and since it's pretty much like being bare foot, I can walk a lot longer than I can in so called "walking shoes".
Finally, I swim. That's the best. Even if I have to use a public pool, it's worth it. The gyms around my town don't have pools, but there is a YMCA with a decent one (that doesn't cost a ton to use during the cooler months) and I go to outdoor pools in the summer.
Last note- lift weights! The stronger your leg muscles are, the less strain normal activity will place on your knee joint. Depending on your injury, there are tons of strength training exercises you can do- I firmly believed squats and lunges were a thing of my past, but after my last surgery, the therapist at the sports medicine clinic I went to disabused me of that notion. It was a lot of work, but now I can do squats and lunges with ease, as long as I use proper form.
If you'd like to get in touch about knee injuries and exercise, please add me or message me. I've had years of experience with my slew of knee problems and I've been t good therapists and bad ones.
  • I usually just do the elliptical...
