I think it's not "ultimately" good - and should be used with caution - even two cups of coffee per day do make a difference.
As the article states, dangerous chemicals are used in the production of coffee : herbicides and pesticides, as petroleum-based solvants (for the decafeination phase) and numerous other chemicals. It is yet preferable to have coffee from whole, organic coffee beans.
Coffee drinkers are likely to develop specific diseases - urinary tract and bladder cancer increase up to 20% for heavy coffee drinkers (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11369742)CONCLUSIONS : In accordance with earlier reviews, we found that coffee consumption increases the risk of urinary tract cancer by approximately 20%. The consumption of tea seems not to be related to an increased risk of urinary tract cancer.
I can also mention the fact that the acid it contains eats away the villi of the small intestine, making it less efficient in nutrients assimilation, heavy drinkers, are likely to develop calcium and mineral defficiencies.0 -
percival, your link is based on an analysis of studies from 1968-1999, published in 2001. the world was a very different place back then.
you quoted "coffee consumption increases the risk of urinary tract cancer by approximately 20%" and "20%" sounds scary, but the article also says "The unadjusted summary OR indicated a small increased risk of urinary tract cancer for current coffee consumers versus non-drinkers." and of course we have no way of knowing what other factors are involved. for example, maybe during the 60's-90's a bigger percentage of coffee drinkers were also smokers than those who didn't drink coffee.
of all the risks in the world, drinking coffee is not something i worry about!
plus, the caffeine does elevate metabolism, allowing people to burn slightly more calories and just get off their butt, lol.0 -
As I agree on the other factors that may have been involved, we cannot ignore all the risks involved.
Of course there are more dangerous substances, but its action on the body should be known.
As it's the case for all stimulants, there is a "cost" - the caffeine ones being those.
I don't think using stimulants is a wise approach (at least for me) - you should get all the energy you need from the diet and rest, not from constant boosters.
It's also interesting to see people experimenting such hard withdrawals when they want to stop coffee (headaches, constipation and drowsiness)0 -
Too much of anything isn't good for you. Hell just walking outside breathing in the polluted air will cause cancer. Drink your coffee.0
