I have taken a big leap! Signed up for a 3k run

Hi all

I have signed up for a 3K run, which is happening in 7 weeks time

Now, where I am not, this is crazy because I can't run 150m without stoping

BUT I am motivated :) Watch this space!

Any tips for beginners?

What a great step! Nothing like setting a timeframe for yourself. You WILL finish the 3k without stopping!

Everyone says the C25k program, and all the other copycat ones, are really good so that might be the best place to start.

I was woefully unfit when I started, and couldn't jog more than one block before having to walk - either through a lack of breath or shin pain. I told myself it was my asthma, but what a cop out!

What worked for me was a mix of exercises, some gym time (mid-range weights and cardio) and time on the bike. I could push myself a bit further in other forms of exercise than I could running so that allowed me to build up my aerobic fitness. Then I moved to a mix of long slow jog/walks and some sprints.

Over the course of a few months I knew my fitness was getting better, so one day I decided to go out to see if I could do 5k, I did it and felt ok so headed back out... when I checked RunKeeper when I got home I had done 9.7k! Sorry to take the post off track, but sometimes it's nice to hear of others who have been through similar situations and come out the other side.

Now go get it sista!

You can do it easy. I can't walk 150 mtrs without being sore..... but I can run 10+km easy. I've clocked up over 60km this week alone. Trust me, 3km is nothing... you wont even feel it. I've just entered my 1st fun run..... 10km one :-O no idea where I'll come in it.

BTW if you have a smart phone..... get Zombies!Run. It WILL help you, not like c25k at all. This one distracts you enough that you dont realize how far you have gone.

You've got to start somewhere...this is great! If you're determined you can do it. As someone else said the C25K is great and you can get an app for your phone if you have a suitable phone, or a podcast on the nhs website. You can do this!

    Fantastic!
Beginners tip: Run SLOWly. Build up your distance, don't worry about speed yet.
