I remember in 8th grade my time was 20 minutes.
Always hated running, but since I have zombies, run! with me,
I enjoy jogging / power walking.

I couldn't run a mile back then. I know we had to do it, but I'm sure I didn't run it and I have ZERO recollection of what my time was LOL. Now? I can do it in about 9.5 minutes if I really push myself. WOOT!!!!!!

My kids have to do this on Wednesday. Will be a great starting point for them, because I have signed them up for a 1 mile race in November when I do my first 10K. We need to start their training!

ETA: And Zombies, Run! rocks! Except they keep eating me. Damn the luck LOL

I haaated it.. I don't even remember what my time was but I know it was horrible. I passed out once or twice doing it (probably dehydration.. not sure why they never tried to prevent that by giving us water). I still dislike running but I do walk a lot!
  • What was worse than that was the rope! I couldnt get 1ft up that stupid thing!

Took me 18 minutes. I ran a mile a few months ago and it was 12 minutes. I want to start running but dont want to do it alone.

I hated running the mile. I was always the slowest guy in my PE class (literally, every single time). Senior year, I finally beat all the girls (still the slowest guy). I had to walk a few yards on that one and finished around 7.5 minutes and almost threw up at the end. Now, I can run that fast while pushing a 30+ pound stroller on a gently hilly course as part of a ten-mile run without stopping. I love running now!
  • I HATED it! I could never do it, I would run as fast as possible for a bit, then have to stop due to gasping and shin splints and walk a bit. What's funny is that I love running now, can easily do three miles without stopping. It makes of kind of sad and curious. Why do PE teachers never teach you how to slowly but surely improve? Something like C25k would have been ideal. I think our PE teacher was under the impression that we were all capable of doing it, we were just a bunch of shirkers who were too lazy and had to be bullied into it. Seems such a waste of an opportunity now.

I don't think anyone can pass out from dehydration on a 1 mile run, unless you just came out of the desert.

My school days were waaaaaay back in the past century. But, as I recall, we [California students] weren't even made to run a mile. We did a four minute run, and they measured how far you got.
We considered it severe torture and dreaded it for WEEKS before we had to do it. Once a year.
