I use 12 pound medicine ball doing suitcase crunches and twisters. Moving up to the 15# next time.
Take a palates class. That will get you in the core. You may feel like you got hit by a truck after the first class though.

You can't spot tone your stomach.

Lifting heavy weights will help you. So will reducing your body fat percentage.

Check out Stronglifts or The New Rules of Lifting for Women as good starting points.

I've lost 1.5lbs this summer (since June) and yet I'm down a pants size. Strength training will do that for you.

no matter how much you work your abs you will not notice a change your stomach, unless your BF% is already really low. The best thing to do is partake in a heavy lifting strength training routine that focuses on compound lifts (multiple body parts at the same time) have a small deficit and get adequate protein. The above will help ensure you lose weight slowly and that the majority of the loss will come from fat, with minimal muscle loss.

so more or less its about all over toning? not just one area at a time?
