Fiber Intake

I've been meaning to ask this question for a while, but is it just me or does the fiber limit on MFP seem too low?

I go over my fiber every single day on fruits/veg alone, before I even have a chance to eat a grain product. Is there such a thing as too much fiber?

mfp is definitely low. i always go way over. not only is fiber really good for you but it helps keep you satiated. i'm sure there's a point where too much is a bad thing. i haven't hit it yet! fiber away!!
  • There can be too much of anything, even if it is good for you! Higher fiber is a benefit of weightloss, helps move everything through the intestines, but you also have to pay attention to what works for you! Those sweet little fiber bars chock full of chicory root, or sometimes psyllium can give some painful bloating and gas, you probably do have a comfortable limit, and I'm sure poking around the macros, you can find out what works best with your system. The USRDA is a guideline, and it's not a one size fits all, keep it fresh, organic if possible, and lots of pure water, you won't even have to think twice =).

I also go over every day. In addition to that, I usually go over on Protein and Sugar as well. Of course... sugar is the natural sugar that you find in fruits. Does anyone think the MFP recommendations are too low for these other items as well?
  • MFP set my goal for fiber around 17 I think, I changed it to 24.

=) That should help, it says 14 g per every 1000 calories.

*It really isn't a bad thing to go over...but I wouldn't aim for like.. 30 gram if you eat 1200 calories or something... You would probably end up with an upset stomach.

I adjusted protein as MFP default setting is pretty low. I feel more satisfied with higher protein intake and eat healthier. Also noted the fiber....pretty low. I agree with OP on the fiber.....a 'healthy' diet (veggies, whole grains) should give a good amount of fiber and it's hard to overdo fiber that way.. If fiber intake is low I think adding some psyllium slowly (and staying well hydrated) should be OK. I honestly have not tracked sugar yet - my 'gut feeling' is that my intake is on the higher side due to fruit, vanilla flavored soymilk etc but I very rarely use sugar, no refined sugar in my house. I will use honey or agave sparingly at home, not really too worried about the sugar from fruit as long as it stays w/in reasonable cal range......

Great read, that explained a lot to me. I always wondered how I could possibly feel so full after eating a big salad vs something carb-y that seemed more filling. Ahhh fiber is my new best friend :)

Mine is set at 30 but today I ate 48, I forgot lunch so ended up eating 4 apples, which was 20 fibre on their own!

I  Fiber. I have my goal set at 30, when my day is complete I will have had 42g. and no I'm not always running to the bathroom, I've been like this for awhile so my body is used to it I can tell when I'm running low. I think it offsets some of my carb intake too (like adkins/net carbs), keeps you regular and keeps me from getting that bloated feeling...AS LONG AS I Drink tons of water, especially if your taking psyllium husks or pills. drink lots of water Fiber is rough on your tummy if you dont!
