Does this sound right? My protien goal seems low...

Okay so in all of my goals for nutrients (fat, carbs, fiber, etc) I am doing okay. But it seems like my protien goal is really low! I thought high protien was good, but maybe I'm misinformed (most likely case). On the MFP app it reccommends only 58g of protien a day for me. I'm already over that by like 35g! Should I be trying to meet my goals as well as possible? or not worry about being over in certain areas?

Also, I do pretty well with sugar. Right now I have 5g left for the day (I get 31g) and the meal I'm planning on for tonight only has 4g. but, should I stop logging fruit because I know that's adding a lot to my sugar grams.

I'm new to this, so any help/info is appreciated!!

Sarah

MFP sets protien goals too low.

dont worry about it... If you want, reset it higher.

There is no one correct way to lose weight. The MFP recommendations, including protein, seem to be set according to the recommendations from the Institute of Medicine. These are general population based recommendations and won't be right for everyone. In general more protein is not a problem if you have no existing medical conditions (otherwise check with your doctor). If you are exercising intensely more protein can help maintain muscle as you lose.

As for sugar, too much is not good. But going over on sugar from fruit and vegetables is usually not a problem. But if you are hitting your sugar goal without counting fruit you may be taking in too much overall sugar.

The protein default setting is pretty low- anything up to 100g per day or even more is fine, if you have no kidney problems.

Are you not logging fruit? It's not just the sugars- fruit has a lot of calories too.

Woops, I meant to ask in the OP, should I *stop* logging fruit. I'm definitely getting most of my sugar from fruits!

    Thank you for your insight!

MFP defaults are ridiculously low for protein and fat, imo. I'm still over 200 pounds so my goal is over 100 grams of protein per day and similar for fat. I joined MFP months ago but didn't stay because of the dietary recommendations. Once I took some time to explore the site indepth, I discovered that I could change my own goals; I've been here ever since.

You can customize your diary settings to have whatever daily % intake you want. I have mine set at 40% carbs, 40% protein, 20% fat.

    MY HOME> Goals> Change goals > custom

Switch it, MFP has low protein goals... if I remember right it is set at 15% ; you can change it to something more reasonable like 20-25%. Plus protein curbs my appetite and keeps cravings at bay

I'm constantly low on the default settings for carbs and high for protein. You can set them to whatever you want although I have not learned how yet and I just don't worry about it.

Eat was you like, what works for you, what makes you feel good. Remember to listen you your body, it's better than any tool out there. You don't need extra protein, you need enough protein.

I found the following quote helpful with all the calorie debates that go on around here and I would say the same applies to macro nutrients.
We’ve been trying to figure out an exact NUMBER of calories that everyone should be eating, without recognizing that everyone is slightly different. In truth, the calories aren’t the end game. Your body is. So the EXACT amount of Calories that are right for you is the EXACT amount that will allow you to maintain your ideal bodyweight no matter what some calculator or chart says.

In other words, an online calculator might tell you that you need to eat 2,500 calories
per day to maintain your ideal bodyweight. But the only way to know for sure if this is
the right amount for you is to test it out. If you gain weight or can’t lose weight eating
that much, then you know you need to eat less to lose weight no matter how many
calculators and text books say otherwise.

This doesn’t mean your metabolism is broken, it just means the estimate of your needs
    was just a bit off.

I routinely am far over the protein and fiber goals for the day. If you are eating well this should be the case. The carbs you eat should be low glycemic index foods preferably high fiber and good amounts of phyto-chemicals... green, fresh, low processing... The protein is easy to be have exceeded the balance level they have as is fiber if you are eating good food sources... I usually only eat about half the suggested carbs, half the fat, and exceed the fiber and protein amounts... Eating high fiber, high nutrient value, low calorie foods is a great way to feel satisfied and lose tons of weight...
