Mid Workout Bonk!

As I manage my calories (probably too tightly) I tend to bonk mid workout losing energy and at times needing to leave to get something to eat or I will get light headed. Any recommendations on a good source of protein/energy to eat either before or during a workout that isnt packed full of carbs?

Carbs are what you need before a workout to give you the energy. Don't count them out completey0

I was really hoping you were going somewhere else with this.0

^^^ THIS
If your workout is longer than 1 hour in length, also consider drinking a sports drink like Gatorade during your workout to help prevent bonking.0 -
Where I live a bonk is something quite different... I read the title and thought "I want to join THAT gym!" :bigsmile:0

Bonk? Where im from that means to have sex, just had to have myself an immature giggle at the word0

Aye. I'd recommend some fruit. That sugar will give you a nice boost.
Also, this is the first time I've heard the time "bonk" used in this fashion.0 -
Haha...I usually wait until after my workout to bonk.0

AH HA - I see it's one of those translation issues... not meaning the same in the UK as it does in the US.
I was curious about managing a bonk and a workout, especially with the bonk in the middle   :laugh:0 -

Same here! Haven't been onto a topic so fast, nor have I been so dissapointed so quickly.0 -
i thought you meant you like to have a shag half way through your workout!! that should be included as a cardio workout!!0

Oh dear, another English lost in translation. made me laugh0

About an hour before I play hockey I have either some almonds or a banana with some yogurt. It really helps. Good luck! (Whatever your bonk is. wink, wink!)0

what exercise are you doing and how much are you restricting your calories. I'm on about 1000 a day deficit and exercise 5 times a week. With this I'm storing enough glycogen to run 6 mile (over an hour). Are you exercising too vigorously perhaps ? If you are the thing thats stopping you may be cardiovascular (oxygen/Co2) rather than the amount of energy you've actually stored. If thats the case eating more will just slow your weight loss and not do anything to help your burn more.0

Nope, it's just the OP - I'm straight up 'murrican & my mind went to sex immediately. Then again, that just happens on its own sometimes too...0 -
Try keeping a protein bar, good granola bar, piece of fruit, or a sports drink in your bag,0

Well, after an intense bonk in the middle of your workout, I'd be most impressed of you had enough stamina to carry on with your gym session.
I really must stop laughing...0 -
My apologies to all those I disappointed by not clarifying "bonk" in the title. I can see how that could be deceiving and a very interesting topic. I actually hadn't heard it used that way until a few months ago and was just as surprised. I do now know if I want to get anyone's attention I only need to use "Bonk" in the title.
Happy Bonking everyone!0 -
I wish I was so lucky!
Back to topic, I find that having coffee and a snack before I workout keeps me going. Usually I have fruit because it doesn't make me feel weighed down. For long runs I usually have an english muffin and peanut butter which gives me a bit more sustained energy.
If you want to cut down the carbs, maybe fruit and peanut butter would work?0 -
Just to prove I didnt make that up - the following is from wikipedia:
"In endurance sports such as cycling and running, hitting the wall or the bonk describes a condition caused by the depletion of glycogen stores in the liver and muscles, which manifests itself by sudden fatigue and loss of energy. Milder instances can be remedied by brief rest and the ingestion of food or drinks containing carbohydrates. The condition can usually be avoided by ensuring that glycogen levels are high when the exercise begins, maintaining glucose levels during exercise by eating or drinking carbohydrate-rich substances, or by reducing exercise intensity."
Back to the other use of the word - I do believe bonking needs added to the exercise database. Its a good calorie burner!0
