Avocado Question

Hi everyone,

I bought an avocado the other day, and it was as hard as a rock, so I set it out to ripen. Today it felt nice and ripe (a little give), so I cut it open to put it into a container to be sure I used it all. There were streaks of brown in bits and pieces of it; I still took it all out and put it into a container. My question is- is it any good? Or should I just dump it?

Thanks in advance,
Kelly

It depends what you are using it for. I'm cheap, so I would probably still use it because they are so expensive! But with avocados I normally keep them in the fridge and set them out a few hours before I'm ready to use them so they ripen up. Most people set them out the night before, but we don't have air so by the time I would get to it the avocado would be brown mush.

It's just bruised bits probably. I would never scoop it out and put it into a container though, it's best to eat it right away or keep the part you don't eat in the skin because it will turn brown and tasty off. Cover any exposed cut sides with lemon or lime juice and plastic wrap to try to lessen the browning.

i'm an avocado lover here!! i keep mine on the counter until they start to turn dark green--when ripe they should have a little give--once you feel the give- i put them in the fridge to stop the rippening process--i wouldn't eat it once there are the brown streaks through it. they do bruise easily so if spots of brown i eat around it. they start to turn brown as soon as the air hits it--so i usually take half and use right away and cover the other half (with the pit still in) and put in the fridge til tomorrow--just used mine for the 1st time with egg salad--it was yummy!!!

Thanks everyone. Probably should have done a bit more research before taking it out of the skin; but at least it was only 69 cents. :-)
