Most Efficient Stride

So, my first goal when I started running was to well...run without dying
Now that I've logged a few km, I'm able to think about more during my run than just "keep breathing, don't fall over, don't have a heart attack", I've been paying attention to my stride.
It seems to be a pattern of throwing the weight of my entire body side to side with each step. I've experiemented by making my knees go higher, and other strides(which, by the way kills me, so I'm thinking it might be a better burn...) but I'm wondering from more experienced runners if there is a really efficient way to run that would optimize the calorie burn and add endurance to my runs.
Any input is great!
