Types of Oatmeal

What's the deal with all the different types of oatmeal? Is steel cut better than a quick-cook oatmeal? Which are most nutritious? Any ideas on preparing oatmeal to achieve a higher protein content?

Thanks!

Hmm I'm not sure about the different types in term of steel cut etc, though I think they might take longer to digest (which is a good thing). I think all plain oats are good (avoid added sugar) and make with milk and add nuts to improve protein, also I know some people use whey products to increase to protein too.

Steel cut is the best, but takes longer to cook. And they do take longer to digest. If you are looking for more protein Quinoa is good and you can make it like oatmeal.

The wholegrain is best for you nutritionally (as it hasn't had a part of it taken away, like quick oats do). So steel cut or rolled oats, I believe they're also called old fashioned oats in some countries.

Quick oats are fine too but make sure to buy the ones without added sugar, salt and chemicals... I just got some last week that are just oat, nothing added. (Jordan's brand, in the UK).

You can make it with milk or soya milk, and add hemp seeds or chia seeds. Chia changes the consistency (it absorbs liquid) so you might have to adjust the recipe...

Steel cut is best. I use Bob's Red Mill or Quaker. I stir in a scoop of protein powder or 2 egg whites depending on my mood. DO not add sugar or you will be counter-productive. Try sweetinging it with fruit -anything natural.
