A week of Binge then starve

I have had an awful week and feel so bad.....so since June I have lost over 10kg.....and not in the healthiest way. For past 3 months I have been getting net calories of approx 200 a day - combination of a 600kcal daily diet and a lot of cardio work at the gym. For example in one week my net calories were 4000kcals. I know this isnt healthy....I know about nutrition, diet etc but Im in such a bad place in my life that it felt good to have total control over something ...ie my food.

I had maybe pigged out 3-4 times in the 3 months - a wedding weekend etc. So I hit the scales maybe a week ago at 66kg (Im 5.8 27yrs old). Before I started getting into shape again I had set a goal of 72kg. But when I got there...I wanted more. I have control over something and no outside influences could effect this.

I have bit of history of this which started in Jan 2011...for some reason I went into ridiculous cut...going from being muscular, six pack to having my jeans falling off and people telling me I looked anorexic. I went from 70kg to 59kg. Then I went traveling solo for a year...I had hated my job and needed to get out. I loved life for this year...new experiences and balooned to 85kg....drink and amazing food from all over the world! When I got back I was determined to get into shape.

Which brings me to this last week....I had hit 66kg and felt what the hell....BINGE!!! Here is a sample of my week diet/cardio

Monday - 2 large deli sandwich rolls...loaded with cheese, coleslaw. Subway footlong, huge icecream sunday, 5 large McD cookies,3 cream cakes - 1 hour soccer game

Tuesday - 1 hour intense spinning vs 3 deli sandwiches, 2 McD Double Cheeseburgers, 6 weetabix, 4 toast and jam, 2 Snickers, 3 large bags of Haribo candy

Wed - 1 hour cardio - apple, coffee, small salad veg only (approx net of -800kcal)

Thurs - 1 hour cardio - apple, glass of milk , plate of brocolli (approx net of -400kcal)

Fri - 1.5 hour cardio - large salad - veg only , natural yoghurt, 2 apples (approx - 800 Kcal)

Saturday - 2 deli sandwiches, 1 kfc meal, mcflurry, 3 cakes

Sunday - 1 hour cardio - apple, coffee, small salad veg only (approx net of -400kcal)

Monday -1 hour soccer - apple, glass of milk , plate of brocolli (approx net of -200kcal)

Tuesday - 1 hour intense spinning vs 1 deli sandwiches, 3 cream cakes, 2 large icecream scoops, Snickers, one of the massive share bars of Galaxy chocolate, large hamburger, fries, curry sauce.

Every time I binged I felt awful......bloated, full, sick! And of course I said this was the one time I would do it...then again...and again!!! I know crash dieting is terrible. I just feel terrible and need any support or someone to kick my *kitten* into gear!!

I think what I need to tell myself is that tomorrow I dont need to burn 1000kcals in the gym for next 3 days as punishment and that Im at a healthy weight......

Sorry for large post and rant but I needed to put this in writing for myself and hope anyone can add to this!!

Thanks

    Get well soon. :flowerforyou:
  • I agree with the previous poster. You are really really really harming your body. Please try to find a healthy balance--neither starving nor binging. when you do binge move on...try to make a better choice the very next chance that you get. exercise a reasonable amount and just TRY TO LOVE YOURSELF. What would you say to your best friend if he/she were doing what you are? TRy to say the same thing to yourself!

As a (relevant) professional, I agree. MFP isn't going to help you.

I'd say go and talk to your doctor. Nothing anybody says can make you change your relationship with your body and with food. Only you can change this, and for that to happen, you need to seek professional help/advice. x

^This. Binging is a terrible cycle and you're only harming your body from functioning normally. You also need to figure out why you do it so you can avoid triggers. I wish you all the best.

I agree with the other commenters - your body is not built for this. Maybe you can find a nutritionist or personal trainer to help you get a diet and exercise plan that works for you.

You need to speak with your doctor hon because this isn't going to be fixed by diet alone. Please seek realtime, professional advice as none of us are qualified to help you. You can beat this!

THIS. Don't ask the internet for help. Please seek professional help.
  • if that was someone you loved, what would you tell them to do. well, do that. you know what to do! Love yourself and move on, just in a healthy way. so little food will lead to a binge, regulate your diet, eat a healthy amount of nutrious foods. Good luck!

I agree with all of the above posts. With the help of a professional you can do it together. My daughter had an eating disorder and it can be done. Grab that persons hand and hang on . It's scary but you are not alone. In my tho'ts and prayers.

Eating disorders are very serious. I say this as someone who has suffered with EDNOS for the past decade+ and I would most definitely recommend professional help. People kindly trying to offer advice like "love yourself" & "don't harm yourself like that" are well meaning but just don't understand. You need a medical professional before this affects you any longer.

Best of luck to you *hugs*

Not only is this extremely unhelpful, this is also harmful. Please think before you speak. People with eating disorders are manifesting a need for control, so your insipid advice is actually encouraging him to hurt himself more.

Hm, yea it does look like you're punishing yourself every time you binge. Perhaps part of the problem on why you feel so bloated is your binges are MUCH more than you're used to. You need to start out smaller, and maybe eat more of the things like yogurts and stuff on binge days. You might also feel icky from eating things like kfc and cakes. But if you eat an excessive amounts of broccli or yogurt and veggie burgers you might think differently. You don't have to punish yourself with hours of cardio. Remember you want to build up some lean muscle!

I'll keep supporting you so long as you keep trying and work on this. But you may also want to consider a professional to assist you as I'm certainly not one and don't want to give you advice that won't work for you. :) Stay strong girl!

This. Everything you are talking about points towards an eating disorder. MFP cannot help you. You need to talk to a doctor.

Ok I thought about it. The OP should actually seek professional help instead of relying on the "internet people" to assist her.

I've been dealing with the exact same thing and it really makes me feel better that someone else has the same problem. I'm trying to stop now because the binges were bad. Once I'd start I would think WTH and just keep going! My stomach was like a black hole. I kept feeling miserable though and my skin was looking horrid so I think this is the week to change. Feel free to add me. I'd love support from someone who understands:flowerforyou:

    Wow.

No one has perfect self control in all areas of their life. Most people do not have perfect self control in even one area of life. Telling her to learn self control is only going to prompt guilt which feeds into the cycle.

To the OP: Professional help might be useful, but I've always found it preferable to save my money since any change that happens comes from within. It sounds like you are a perfectionist: either complete and total control or letting it all go. It's hard but you need to come to accept yourself as imperfect and love yourself anyway. Accept when your control is imperfect and maybe you eat a cookie, then put that behind you and realize that in the greater scheme of your life, it wasn't such a big deal. Do your best, but don't beat yourself up over mistakes. That will only make you want to give up on yourself and most likely lead to a binge. Work on small changes to your diet, but more importantly, work on small changes in your mindset. I don't know if you have children, but I have two and when I start thinking negatively about myself, or feeling an urge to indulge in self-destructive behavior, it helps to try to treat myself the way I would want my children to treat themselves.

    Good luck.

That part, you are correct about, & as you can see, nobody is disagreeing with that. But brushing this person's issues off as a lack of self control was calloused & potentially harmful on your part.
