Workout Suggestions?

So, I recently had an epiphany. . . Being more active (and, obviously, eating right) is the key to being healthy. I've traded sleeping in for Jazzercise, evening TV for walks, and lazy Sundays for hinking. I've heard a lot about P90X and Insanity and all these "amazing" workout programs, but are there any to get me from where I'm at currently to there?

The few people I know who jumped right in to P90X with no previous workout program gave up because it was too hard. I want to set myself up for success, not failure. Please help!

Edit: Sorry, I just realized I got this in the wrong category :-(

there is no rule saying you have to jump into those programs full bore (and honestly unless you are already pretty fit and up to snuff on all the movements and science behind the workouts you probably shouldn't). Go at your own pace, but make sure you are pushing yourself. Don't try and keep up with the professional trainers and others on the dvds whose sole career it is is to do such things. Work up to it, trust me.

I got the whole P90X thing when it was first getting big and I tried to jump in feet first despite just barely passing the minimum health exercise test they give you. I wrecked my back (though I do have a pre-existing back injury) something fierce in the first three days that side-lined me from work for two weeks! Instead of trying to match their pace, I should have done it at my own and make sure my form was correct, but you live your learn.

So don't be afraid to do them, just do them at a pace you won't injure yourself with and work up to that professional tempo, you'll still see plenty of results! Go get it!

These are my 2 favorite workouts that I took home from a boot camp I was in:

Fifties: Choose 4 or 5 exercises. Do each one 20 times, then 15 times each, then 10, then 5. This usually takes me 15 minutes, so I'll repeat if I have 30 minutes, or I'll do 15 minutes of cardio and then do a set of fifties. Some exercises I incorporate: jumping jacks, burpees, lunges, crunches, pushups, ball sits, and sometimes reps with weights.

5-5-5-5....5 minutes of cardio, 5 minutes of calisthenics and/or weights.. I usually do the cardio on a mini trampoline at home to try to be kinder to my joints - jogging, knee-ups, jumping jacks, etc.

It depends what you want... in home workout or gym. If you go to the gym, Strong Lift 5x5 or New rules of lifting for woman. If you want an in home workout, Chalean Extreme or Power 90 is better for beginners. Insanity and P90X are tough and I love them but I have been an athlete all my life. Or you can always do www.bodyrock.tv or on demand. Just make sure you incorporate heavy weight training with HIIT.
