Should I start Keto?

Hey all! I'm fairly new to the realm of dieting/watching-what-you-eat.....that's probably the reason I'm so outta shape right now! I was reading about the keto diet on [reddit](reddit.com/r/keto) and it's really intriguing. I was wondering if there were any keto dieters here on MFP who could offer some tips/wisdom based on their experience?

Currently I've been stuck at ~270lbs. I'm 6'1" and should way somewhere around 190-210 (I'm broad...). I figured I could try using keto to get there cause what I'm doing AIN'T workin. I work a 9-5 in an office...so I don't move most of the weekday. Just a bit of info...

Again any tips/advice/friend requests would be AWESOME! Thanks!

I'm guessing you're just talking about a high protein diet? I didn't cut out all carbs but I did up my protein to try and get 1 gram per pound of body weight. I have a 40% carbohydrate, 35% protein, 25% fat ratio as a goal. I try to make sure and fill my protein bucket gets filled as highest priority and then the rest pretty much falls into place automatically just by avoiding high fat foods. Eating a higher protein diet is good but always remember that total calorie count is the bottom line. Don't think you can eat more just because it's a protein. A calorie still counts as a calorie no matter what group it's from.

I was about 250 at the first of the year and I'm about the same height. 6'2" so I know where you're coming from. I really didn't look "fat" but I was overweight for sure. Now I'm down to 210. Amazingly awesome difference. I'm not actually trying to lose pounds now, just working on body composition and focused on cardio fitness improvement at the moment. Do you know how much easier it is to do pull ups if you drop 40 pounds? Yeah, it's a big deal.

Keep your protein intake up there as I mentioned. Do some cardio for 25 -30 minutes 4-5 days a week, and fit in strength training 3-4 days a week. Do this while you're cutting calories back (Eat MFP recommendations). The extra protein and strength training will help your body hold on to as much muscle as possible. That way you look awesome once you get rid of most of the extra body fat.

I have a desk job too but eating correctly is honestly 70% of the battle so don't let the fact that you don't move much during the day demotivate you. Just keep doing the right thing day after day, week after week. At first you'll be down a pound, maybe 2. Then you'll find that you're down 5 pounds all the time, then 10, and all those little moments where you choose to eat good compound and you'll find that you're down 25-30 pounds. Then everyone you know will be like "Hey, did you lose weight?" It's funny because everyone seemed to notice at around the same time. When I hit 220 everyone seemed to start getting shocked at how much thinner I looked.

The only negative thing that someone should tell you before you get started.... None of my pants fit anymore! No kidding. 100% of my pants are too big. Save your money for more clothes. It's funny because I started getting serious because I didn't like how my pants fit. I fixed the problem and then some.
  • Did the diet for 6 weeks and had great results then put myself in the hospital for 3 days because I suffered from metabolic acidosis. From what you are describing it seems you need to look at your foundational health nutrition then any "get six pack abs in one week" diet.
