By popular demand we're back again with 150 of the healthiest foods on earth. For those who are new I have attached at the bottom all previous posts. I will be posting a new food every day as time allows. All information is from the book by Jonny Bowden, Ph.D., C.N.S. "The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth".

Today #33: Raw Organic Milk
Intro: Raw, certified organic milk--unpasteurized and unhomogenized--is one of the true health foods on the planet. It's a wonderful source of protein and calcium, the fat in it is perfectly acceptable, and it tastes absolutely delicious.
Raw milk is loaded with nutrients, including beneficial bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus. Because it isn't subjected to the high heat of pasteurization, those good bacteria--along with wonderful beneficial enzymes--aren't destroyed. And according to Dr. Joe Mercola, raw milk is the finest source of calcium available.
* Milk from grass-fed cows contains higher levels of cancer-fighting CLA and will be richer int he full gamut of vitamins and minerals.
* Vitally important nutrients like vitamins A and D are greatest in milk from cows eating green grass.
* The fat content of the milk from organically raised grass-fed cows is wholly different than that of their factory-farmed brethren. Studies have shown that the omega-3 fat contect of grass-fed, pasture-roaming cows is as high as 50 percent (it's virtually nonexcistent in factory-farmed animals).
* Reseach shows that organic milk contains between 71 percent and a whopping 240 percent more omega-3s than nonorganic milk, plus it has much better ratio or omega-3 to omega-6 fats than conventional milk.
* Raw organic milk is hard to find--only a couple of states sell it (California is one). But more and more people are turning to small farms and collectives. It's worth looking for.
A NOTE ON GOAT'S MILK
Goat's milk has more easily digestible fat and protein content than cow's milk. )This increased digestibilit of the protein is of great importance to infant diets as well as for invalid and convalescent diets.) It also has 18 percent more calcium, 41 percent more magnesium, 22 percent more potassium, and almost twice the vitamin A. What it doesn't have is much folic acid of B12, something to consider if you're using it for an infant's diet. And many peoplewho are allergic to cow's milk do just fine with goat's milk. Plus, it tastes great.
However, the same caveats exist as with cow's milk. Much of commercial goat's milk is not only pasteurized but "ultrapasteurized." That gives it a ridiculouslu long shelf life, but unfortunately, according to Dr. Ron Schmid, "turns a great food into something that's basically useless."

I have not had raw milk but I've had non homogenized and I swear I tasted cow. But it probably was all in my mind. I have been meaning to stop and get goat milk and goat yogurt and try it.
