Mashed sweet potato/yam - convince me

Ok, so I'm trying to cut down on potatoes. I love sweet potato roasted, made into chips, but as mash? Bleuuurggh. I think the problem is it reminds me of baby food and it's too sweet. Does anyone have a way of preparing them to convince me otherwise? Or other mash ideas?

Oh I love sweet potato anywhich way it comes, especially mash, haha! I make the mash, then add finely chopped onions, cabbage, grated carrot (or for that matter any leftover veg that's in the fridge) and a bit of pre-grilled crispy back bacon if I've got the calories, even a sprinkling of grated cheese if I'm splashing out and have done a lot of exercise ... Then wipe a drop of oil around a non-stick frying pan, slap the lot in there and cook til crispy brown on the outside. Yum yum! I suppose to be really healthy, you could make into balls and bake without the cheese or bacon, still great with just the veggies! It reminds me of bubble and squeak that my mum always made on Mondays with the leftover veg and potatoes from Sunday dinner! Or a kind of Irish Colcannon... Enjoy!0

I zap it in the microwave, then mash with olive oil and plenty of black pepper.
But watch the nutrients - yes it's got good things like beta-carotene, but it also has a lot of sugar, and as much carbohydrate as regular potato.0 -
Sounds good. The onion and bacon would cut through the sweetness a bit. Thanks!0

It's meant to be lower GI than normal potato is that right? If it's got the same carbs and more sugar I might go back to normal mash0

Cut sweet potatoes into small chips. Spray with 1 cal spray. Sprinkle with chilli powder. Cooked till crispy. Dance with delight based on how good they taste!0

I usually cut yams and regular white potato into 2 cm slices and steam them together in a rice cooker.
Then I add a tiny amount of butter and eat it as a nice side dish - with brown rice and grilled fish.
Rice has this nice neutral taste, grilled fish is a bit salty, so yams add some sweetness to it.
It's very Japanese - they love mixing tastes and having a lot of tiny bits on their plate.
PS. I wish I could post pics here...0 -
I'm a newbie, how do you guys post pictures here?
Found a picture of my steamed yams and wanted to share.0
