Getting worried about possible job...

Okay. I had an interview on Friday the 7th. The interview went really well, the lady who interviewed me literally said, "We're looking for people with good attitudes, and you've shown me you have just that." She said I'd hear from her by Monday or Tuesday.
Both days pass, and I called her once on Wednesday, and then on Thursday I got in touch with her. She said she had 40 interviews to finish and a stack of applications. However, she said to call her back today if I hadn't heard from her already. I took it as good news because I figured she wouldn't give me permission to call back if she didn't want to hire me.

Today, I just got off the phone with her and she said she would call me back in a little while, today and nothing else. So far it's been all me chasing her, but I've stuck with her call deadlines and always spoke to her.

Be honest with me, am I just getting toyed with at this point or is there still hope?

I think you've still got a shot. She doesn't have time to toy with you, first of all. You're clearly going to keep calling her until she gives you an answer, and if she was tired of you she'd tell you that you were no longer being considered. Second, she may need to coordinate with others at the company prior to making you a formal job offer.

I once waited three weeks after a second interview, getting more nervous all the time. Turned out one of the decision-makers was on vacation! Got the job.

You might still be in the running but you need to stop calling. As hard as it is just wait for her or HR to call you back.
You don't want to alienate them by constantly calling to check on application status.

    depends on lots of things.
if there were lots of interviews/ applications it only fair to finish them all before giveing out responses.
Does the role require you to chase ppl up?? if so this could still be part of the interview.
be polite but persistent if so.
could be shes not very good at saying "sorry you didn't get the job" but if so SHE needs to work on it not you.
I would say keep trying, but also start looking for other work. (can't hurt to get 2 job offers)

I'm hoping that's the case, that's she's talking with someone else about it. Should I call her back at the end of the day if she hasn't called me back? This time she said she would call me back in a bit, and I (like an idiot) forgot to ask a time frame. UGH!
