increasing exercise

To lose weight do you need to increase the level of exercise or just reduce calorific intake. I am almost chairbound due to pain although I can walk short distances and walk the dog and poo pick round the ponies field. I sometimes manage to walk about 2 miles. this has been my level of exercise since I broke my leg 2 years ago so this is what I am used to. I cant up that by much as it took 5 months to find the fractures in my knee so I now need a full replacement. Would doing a few extra stairs or walking a bit further do enough good to be effective or wont it make much difference
