Citalopram/antidepressants - weight loss or gain?

I have been put on a small dosage of citalopram to try and control my anxiety
BUT
(and i know i shouldnt have done this)
according to a lot of online forums, citalopram seems to either make you gain weight or your weight loss comes to a stall.
i'm wondering if anyone can shed any light on this and can clear up any rumors?
thanks

I'm currently taking 40mg of fluoxetine at the moment and it has not hindered my weight loss also my mothers on 40mg citalopram and has lost 48lb over the past few years, i hope this helps!0

im on citalopram for anxiety and post natal depression, ive been on 40mg for about a year and have just been put down to 20mg and it hasnt made a difference with my weight, if anything ive consistently lost weight in the year, from 183lbs to what i am now which is 136lbs but the 183lb was literally a week after i gave birth, it will help with anxiety which can cause alot of people to overeat in itself!0

hello,
I have found that I have lost weight - but - I was on it many years ago previously and I gained. So I think I am overcompensating becouse I know I gained from it before. If you have not noticed any dramatic gain/loss over the first few months then it's probably not going to affect you.
I have gone from 10st to 9st8 since being on it for 6 weeks. If you are concerned I'd ask your GP to switch you to a non-weight gaining SSRI like fluoxetine.
Hope this helps0 -
I suffer from major depression and PTSD. I am on celexa, wellbutrin, trazadone, abilify, clonopin, and the occasional xanax. Several of these are said to cause weight gain or make it more difficult to lose, but I've lost 32 pounds now. Don't let it hold you back.0

I was on 30 mg of citalopram when I first started my diet..... it didn't stall me in anyway that I know of..... but I don't believe it helped either... everyone is different and you need to monitor yourself and see how it goes...

I have been on Celexa for almost 2 years. I definitely noticed weight gain with it. I would say I gained about 25 pounds just in the last year. Sure, some of it was from lack of exercise, but I didn't eat junk! I definitely think the Celexa played a big part in my gain and my doctor agreed. I started eating a lot healthier and exercising 6 days a week just a month ago and I have been losing steadily. I asked my doctor about lowering my dose and eventually coming off it over the next year or so...hopefully I can make this happen!0
