Hey guys. I will be basically living on the for a while soon. Without a decent gym close by will be trying to get as much body plyo work done in the sand. I have heard that some people get sore arches from sand sprints. Any tips on avoiding certain sand related injuries ?

I am told you can do a bit of damage to your achilles running on soft sand.

While on vacation I run 4-6 miles every morning on the beach, barefoot, and never have any issues. I wear VFFs when running on the street, so I'm used to minimal support anyway. Good luck!

keep on your runners (also saves you from stepping on anything sharp) and stay on your toes! Running with my toes turned in a little also seems to keep the sand out of the shoes. There is no difference in the benefit, shoes on or off, IMO. have fun!

Start off by running closest to the water (harder sand) as it eases the transition from hard pavement to soft sand. The big thing about sand-running you need to worry about is that because the sand is soft, your limbs (below your knee) will go through a further range of motion (as the sand gives way to your weight)

Stretch beforehand and you should be fine. Over time you can move further from the water in the softer sand with little issue.

[And if you plan on running barefoot, watch out for stuff in the sand, like glass shards, rocks, or bees, evidently. (I got my first bee sting by stepping on one on the beach. Strange thing.) That said, start off with shoes that you don't mind getting wet--graduate to Vibram FiveFingers (VFF) once you get to the soft dry sand, so you don't potentially ruin/stink up a pair of expensive shoes]
