Any runners or walkers here heading to NYC next weekend for the Tunnel to Towers Run? I ran it in 2008 and 2009..registered again in 2010 and 2011 but didn't make it there for the run. I'm finally going to get back there this year. If you've never done it, or heard of it, it's really a very inspirational/sad story that started this event, and something runners really need to experience.

On Sept 11, 2001, firefighter Stephen Siller had just gotten off duty and was headed to meet his brother to go golfing. When he heard about the attacks on the World Trade Center, Siller turned around and went to his firehouse in Brooklyn to grab his gear. He then headed toward Manhattan to assist with the rescue efforts, but was stopped on the Brooklyn side of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel since all roads leading in to Manhattan were closed down. Siller got out of his truck, grabbed his 75 lbs of gear and ran from Brooklyn, through the tunnel and ended up at the World Trade Center, where he died in the collapse.

Stephen, who was orphaned at 10 years old and raised by his older siblings, left behind a wife and 5 children. His family started the Stephen Siller Let Us Do Good Childrens Foundation and, with the help of the City of New York, organized a 5K run that starts in Brooklyn, runs through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel and Battery Park, ending near Ground Zero.

This is not a 5K to run for fast time. Thousands run it, and the tunnel gets very crowded. But as you come out of the tunnel on the Manhattan side you will run past a line of NYC firefighters holding banners honoring every NYC firefighter who died on 9/11. As you run through Battery Park you will see the FDNY boat with all nozzles open. You will see firefighters from all over the world running the 5K the way that Stephen Siller ran it that day...in FULL TURNOUT GEAR.

For runners and walkers, it's well worth the trip.

I would love to do this run. I was born and raised in NYC. I think I will look into it for next year. Thanks for the info.
