Muscle gain

Just thinking....
If a person needs to be losing weight, but continues to eat like they are maintaining the weight.....yet they lift a lot and start building muscle. Wouldn't they start losing because the muscle is burning more calories then the fat?
Just curious. Some days I feel like I have eaten too much, but I am getting so strong and muscle definition is getting noticable in places. The scale is slowly moving downward due the type of food and the amount I eat, but it would be nice to know that I am not ruining everything on "those days".
