weight loss side effect? body odor & nicotine smell?

My body is FINALLY releasing weight and I am so so glad but I have a question...

Over the last few days I have been noticing that I have really bad body odor. It is all over my body. I keep showering, using deodorant (obviously) and using perfume so I hope it isn't too noticeable to other people. I have NEVER had a problem with this before.

Then, two days ago, I noticed a strong cigarette smell that seemed to be coming off of me. I smoked for years but haven't touched a cigarette in 2 years so I thought I was imagining it. Then, last night, I had the "taste" of having smoked in my mouth. This is really strange. Have any former smokers experienced anything like this? Could nicotine be stored in my fat cells?

Come to think of it, I have also been very jittery and having trouble sleeping and that is what used to happen if I smoked in the evening.

I know this sounds crazy but I swear I am of sound mind.

I have read that fat stores toxins and that when you metabolize it they are released. It could be that. No idea of the veracity of that, but it is plausible.

My son has a serious problem with body odor even though he bathes daily. Part of it can be caused by the particular strains of bacteria growing on your skin. If you with your armpits with white vinegar or lime juice it helps tremendously. Solved his problem completely.

IMO, perfume makes you smell worse. It doesn't cover up anything.

My instincts tell me this is excellent news for you. After reading your post I realized this happened to me too. It was years ago after quitting smoking and getting healthy. I think your body is detoxing and that is definitely hopeful news. :)

By far the very best deodorant I have ever used is coconut oil (something like this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spectrum-Naturals-Organic-Coconut-Oil-14-fl-oz/10535750) mixed with baking soda. That's it, mix it in a little bowl until it is a creamy consistency and you can use this stuff all over your (exterior) body . My husband (who is a sweaty person) also swears by it. You can cover the mixture with plastic wrap to save (or put it in a little jar maybe even a roll on stick [never tried that]) and this stuff stays good for years. Not only is this the good stuff, but you also get the added benefit of no added aluminum (or anything) so it's likely much healthier for you than the store bought brands. Congrats on your detox and good luck!

ETA: Just wanted to add that coconut oil turns liquid when heated so that is just something to think about when you are storing/using it.

I don't have time to research your issue, but for me, when I lost 20 lbs last summer, I got spotting for several days. When I researched that, I found that fat cells (especially belly fat) can store estrogen. So when you lose weight, that estrogen is released into your body and can cause break-through bleeding and spotting.

Sounds similar to what is happening to you....not with estrogen, but possibly with nicotine!

You should get your thyroid levels checked.

I was sweating alot, strong BO smell (despite showering twice a day), jittery and had trouble sleeping and was diagnosed with a hyperactive thyroid. Of course hopefully this isn't the case for you but it is defiantly worth getting checked out

Hey, no joke. You are detoxing. You might want to look at doing a more intentional form of detox that involves flushing the toxins out of your body asap via your colon. I'm not sure you want all that stuff coming out of your pores and onto your skin.

lol...im with cadillacfrank .....only my smell might be a little more Wild Turkey...

When you lose bodyfat/weight your body will also burn ketone's......dont have the time nor space to go into the physiology of fat burning here but ketone's are released into the bloodstream which can also cause bad body odor....usually you see this type of body odor from people that are on low carb diets but can happen to all diet plans. Ive never heard about the smoke smell you say you are having but it has to have something to do with fat storage and im sure it will pass in time.

it could be, though i haven't experienced it myself (i also haven't lost a whole ton of fat or been off smoking that long), but my body odor has significantly changed and gotten stronger since i started pushing myself. i rarely had a B.O. issue before, now when I work out or sweat, all I can smell is onions, and it's disgusting!!!

Yup. Your body is simply getting rid of junk that it once stored for "a rainy day". You've convinced it that the day is never coming so it's doing some house cleaning. It's a good thing.

Releasing toxins?!?! Seriously?!? wtf, this forum at times. Maybe she should also check for a full moon that may be interfearing with her astrologicals signs energy patterns..

Anyway, are you doing high protein low carb diet? If so thats ketosis causing you to smell. And side effects in addition to smelling like crap include your hormones getting effed right up, which would explain feeling off.

I thought that the ketoses reaction was only when doing very low carb (I'm not doing that now but have in the past) so I didn't think of that. Maybe that is the reason for the BO...

Ketones are produced when the body burns fat at a very high rate. This can be caused by rapid weight loss, heavy exercise, or illness. The ketones are released into the blood and urine, which eventually find their way into your breath and sweat. Of course, it’s great to lose extra weight, but you should do it gradually and not with any extreme or fad diets. If you cut calories but still eat a balanced diet, you shouldn’t have odor from ketones.

Zinc is also important to the senses of taste, smell and eyesight. A zinc deficiency can result in taste abnormalities

An unpleasant body odor may be a symptom of a vitamin B12 deficiency. Other symptoms include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, weight loss, shortness of breath and diminished reflexes. Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin that is involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fat and protein. It is necessary for nerve tissue regeneration and cell development. Strict vegetarians often lack a sufficient level of vitamin B12 because meat, especially organ, meat is a prime dietary source. Older people do not absorb necessary vitamins as effectively and need an extra boost of vitamin B12 to prevent side effects, such as foul body odor and bad breath. Alternative dietary sources of vitamin B12 include shellfish, cheese and eggs.

When your body is low in vitamin C, you are more likely to retain bacteria on the outside of your skin. According to MayoClinic.com, apocrine glands in your scalp, groin and armpits secrete a fatty sweat that can cause an unpleasant body odor when bacteria feed on it. Compounds from smelly foods, like garlic and onions, can be retained by your body and secreted with your sweat. Vitamin C deficiency that leads to gum disease can lead to body odor coming from your mouth.

Although proper hygiene is practiced, the buildup of toxicity in the body due to a metabolic defect causes excessive and sometimes uncontrollable odor.

While thousands of metabolic disorders exist, there are several specifically linked to body odor. One of the most common is trimethylaminuria, or "fish odor disease" as it is commonly known, the condition where the body cannot process the organic compound, trimethylamine. A noticeably fishy smell is present in the breath, urine and sweat.

Diabetes is the body's inability to properly metabolize sugar and can give the body a fruity smell. Scurvy, which means the body is vitamin C-deficient, can produce a rotten or decaying scent. Diabetic ketoacidosis, which results when a diabetic's blood sugar is too high and in response the body makes "ketones" to break down fats. Similar to diabetes, an excessively fruity smell may emanate from the body.

    That's just a start.

Not sure about nicotine smell, I know people can develop an ammonia smell. That usually happens if your burning amino acids for energy instead of glucose.
  • I have also read that fat cells store toxins such as nicotine ect. So you may be burning through those stored toxin cells and they are being released into your body.

It's all that trapped smoke coming out. I stunk real bad around 16..i had already gone through puberty...I don't know what was going on...if anythng, I think I bathe more often now, due to all the exercise, which seems to take care of any odor...no complaints from the fam.

On an episode of House once there was a guy who was overweight whose condition got worse in hospital because as he lost weight having a controlled diet in hospital, stuff was released from his fat cells into his blood stream.

If House said it then it must be true. Either that or you have Lupus.

This is WONDERFUL news to me! It explains so much. My estrogen has been normal but my other hormones out of balance. When I had blood work done to check my hormone levels again, my estrogen had spiked. I had also lost 10 pounds during that same month. I'm certain that this is why my estrogen had spiked.

I find I smell better and have less b.o then when I was eating greasy food all day long. I assumed it was just part of the whole "you are what you eat" idea.

Although I always smell of nicotine as I'm a terrible chain smoker.

When I smoked I was really quite good at it - and 2 stone lighter: this is a 20 year quest I am on.

If it takes as long to lose it as I've carrried it around then I'll be 83, Oh?

Smelling bad at times is a side effect of weight loss that isn't often written about, few talk about, doesn't happen to everybody, you don't always realize it is occurring when it is (and people are being nice, not to telling you that you stink), but is very real. Showering excessively doesn't seem to solve it either.

It will pass with time, you just have to deal with it for the few days/weeks/months that it happens to you.

It can happen if you're not doing a low carb diet or if you're not a smoker.

I had it for about 2 months at the peak of my weight loss. Showering 2x a day plus brushing my teeth several times a day seemed to do next to nothing to solve it. I just had to deal with it, eventually it went away.
