Suggestion before buying a weight loss supplemement

I've seen many posts about appetite suppressant and weight loss drugs that were recommended by various outlets. We all know deep down that the only way to achieve sustainable weight loss is through a healthy diet, but sometimes people want a little boost. Before considering a pill recommended by a tv show or in a google ad, look for peer-reviewed articles about the drug. If you can't find anything about the drug specifically, look for articles about the active ingredient.
I know...I know who wants to read journal articles besides scientists, right? Well, I feel you can gather a much better opinion from an experimental-based article than the collection of information presented by the company selling the drug. If the tables, charts, and graphs are off putting, read the abstract then the discussion. To learn more about how relevant the study is, read the methods section. A quick pubmed search to read an unbiased interpretation of data is a more reliable decision making resource than the information provided by a company trying to make money.

yes - and also research those quick weight loss diets, you know one ones you see in magazines. Always look for both sides of the story. You will find quite a few success stories here on MFP which may or may not work for you. One site that has alterative views is http://www.quackwatch.com/
Keep in mind that along with the scientific studies (sometimes on non-humans and/or very small sample sizes), company abstracts and sites that cry scam you will find all the sites that praise it in a web search. I say always be a skeptic until you have done your research.0
