How long until you reach "starvation mode"

For the past 6 weeks I've been doing this I've been eating at least 1300 calories but after a horrible week of over eating and gaining 3 lbs in 1 week, I started eating about 1000 cals for about 4 days. I lost a pound doing that but I'm not going to keep doing this, just for a few days because I've exercised a lot so my net calories went down. How long does someone get to "starvation mode"? I'm scared I will be in it soon if I keep under eating.

  • I was told when i first to took a nutrition class to look at it like this:

Your body does not restart the next day it does not know the difference if you eat 500 1 day and 2000 the next day, you could just aim for an overall amount of calories throughout the week. Example if you are trying to eat 1500 calories a day you are aiming for 10500 calories a week, so you could really eat 10000 calories in one day and split the 500 between the rest of the week and you would still be at the same outcome.

and in my experiance starvation mode takes a long time to actually get into, from what i notice the weight gain from starvation mode is really just not eating for a while then eating something terrible so it stores as fat, a person who is actually starving and not able to get enough food does not gain weight.

an obese Scotsman didn't eat for over a year, if that helps. He lost a lot of weight, and kept it off. Average loss was about 0.8 lbs/day from memory.

Obese women on a 300 calorie PSMF (supervised clinical trial) showed metabolc rate reduction during 25% weight loss :-
