Weight/strength training and marathon training

Running a marathon is on my bucket list of today before I’m 30. I’ve recently been given the opportunity to run the Paris Marathon in April 2013. One month after my 29th birthday. The idea of doing this both scared me and excites me in equal measures. The idea of my body being able to undertake a challenge like this after the weight loss and healthy living journey I’ve taken is thrilling!

I do though wonder whether I can fit the training in? A marathon is obviously far and will need lots of cardio running time has anyone trained for a marathon and managed to keep up their weight training? What impact does this have on your legs?

I don’t want to go totally cardio as my body responds much better on heavy lifting I need to find the balance while I’m training... any tips or insights?

You can continue lifting while training for a marathon. I currently am training for the Philly marathon in Nov. I run 4 days a week and lift on 2. I have reduced the leg work so that I am maintaining strength but not pushing hard and getting sore. I do try to work my upper body just as hard. That said, when I am tired or sore from my running I will skip weight lifting. My goal is to maintain where I was before starting training for the marathon. After the marathon, I will focus on weight lifting for the winter and reduce my running.

A marathon in Paris, How cool!!!!!!!!!!!!
