When to measure for wedding dress?

Greetings! I'm getting married in June, but the fitting for the dress must be done by the middle of November. I am five pounds from my goal weight, but am concerned that after the holidays and a wicked second semester of grad school, I won't be able to remain at this weight. Should I wait to take measurements until I reach my GW or do it now and leave myself some wiggle room when the dress arrives, knowing its easier to take a dress in than let one out?

I would go ahead and order it to fit where you are now.. then if you need it taken-in during your fittings (which should be a month or two prior to the wedding). They can take it in from there. You are very correct in that it's easier to take in.. versus letting out!

it's not always easier to take the dress in esp if there is a lot of detail to the dress. when you get fitted in november let the seamstress know you have an extremely stressful period coming up and ask that she fit the dress a little loose just in case. keep in my if they have to take it in again they will charge you. fyi, 5lbs will not make a HUGE difference in the measurements (unless you're short) me i'm 4' 11" and 5lbs does make a big difference on my small frame.

Order it now. There is enough material in wedding gowns to let them out if needed. It takes 3-6 months for most gowns to get in. This will allow for a few fittings if needed. I HIGHLY recommend this because my dress was totally wrong the 1st and 2nd times!! The length was waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too short both times and too loose in the hips. They just couldn't get it right. Luckily the 4th time was the charm and that was only 3 weeks ago and I'm getting married in 3 weeks!
Long story short... get your dress ASAP :)

I am also getting married in June, have about 5 lbs to my goal, and I'm getting alterations done in November! Twinsies! ;)

The fitter at the shop told me that there are about 20 pounds of wiggle room per size, so I think we'll be fine. A couple months before the ceremony we can get the last-minute alterations done if needed (but it probably won't even be an issue). Also, something to consider is whether you're a stress eater or a stress starver. I personally lose my appetite when I'm anxious about something, which is good to know.

Congratulations! June brides... heck yes!

Why not just use the dress as a strong motivator to maintain your goal weight? Don't set yourself up for failure... Having a hectic life doesn't make you fat

Order a dress to fit the size you are now (even if it's a size bigger than you intend on being) and get alterations done no more than a month prior to your big day. I'd even suggest 2 weeks prior if you really trust the person doing the alterations. I've been married twice and had 3 dresses (one got ruined by my mom's dog) and both of the dresses I ended up using had to be let out at the last minute because I was too optimistic about my wedding day weight and underestimated the power of sweat and bloating!
