Ladies & Weights... How did you start?

  • I don't go to a gym, so I rely on DVDs. I started with various Jackie Warner strength workouts, progressed to P90X, and now have been doing various incarnations of Chalean Extreme for nearly a year.

I'm doing NROL4W as well and love it. If you feel silly taking your book to the gym, don't. It's really not necessary. As others have said just practice the exercises at home. In stage one, workout A, you're only doing 5 different "moves" so it's pretty easy to remember. Same with workout B.

I read some books and articles online on different types of body weight exercises. I also have a resistance band that came with pilates instructions. I plan to get a membership to my local community center that has a weight room. I suggest doing some research. I also plan to read The New Rules of Lifting for Women, as it is highly recommended by many MFPers.

The above is way more exercises than a beginner needs to bother with. Not that it matters since the OP said she got NROL4W way back on page 1.

    1. how do you know what to do each day? Usually on each machine it'll show you what the machine muscles it is targeting.
    2. how do you know you're doing the sets properly (form, etc)? I know because if I am lifting and I can get up to 15 reps and still hurt with the weight I have then I'm good. If I go up to 15 sets but my arm is already torched that means I'm doing it tooo heavy.
    3. how do i NOT get intimidated with all the muscle-y people taking up the equipment? LOL. Just ignore them. That's what I do. Heck, I'm a woman and I'll be lifting small weights but at least I'm still gaining the same muscles they are. Lol.

I first got started with a gym back in 2009, and it was a women's only gym. Their main thing was circuit training...first day, a lady took me around the room showing me how to use the machines and had me them out to see what weight to put on each. Every other day we did circuit training there.
