Runners question...

Anyone tried using compression sleeves over their shins to reduce/alleviate pain when running? Broke down and bought a pair tonight hoping they would help get me through my long run in the morning. Anyone had any luck with them?

I wear Injini Compression socks at times. Not sure what you mean by pain when running. I don't use them for pain at all. They really are for post run compression to aid in recovery. I find that running in them, my calves are a little less sore after a run. But that's just personal preference and on the advice of my podiatrist. But I'd be concerned of using them to mask pain.

It's all a money racket...No one has used them in the past and people were fine. Believe the hype if you want.

I have muscle soreness on the front of my legs toward the tops of my shins after a longer run or if I run a few days in a row. I always take at least 2 days off weekly which should be adequate time for recovery. Not sure why they are always so sore. Someone mentioned trying the compression sleeves, just hope they work because they're too pricey not to!

The purpose of compression sleeves is to aid blood flow (venous flow, in particular), which is thought to aid performance.
They might help you by keeping your calves warmer. But, if you have pain, perhaps you should get examined by a professional? Just to be careful.

I've only found them to be beneficial for recovery from 17+ hilly training runs (putting them on after the run for the calves). Other than that, it's all in your mind. ;-)

Sounds like you're dealing with shin splints. Here's one of many threads for those-

  • Thanks all of you! Think I may have been in denial about it being shin splints. After reading up on it some more I think I have a mild case. Guess I'll be taking it slow for a few days!

Have you tried a foam roller? I use the rumble roller, it's a bit more intense but that may help as well as more calf stretches and ankle strengthening.

Yeah, if you're talking shin splits, then those aren't going to do much for you.

Are you running in good, supportive shoes? I virtually eliminated my shin splints by simply going and getting fitted and getting into good supportive shoes (I run in Saucony Hurricane 14s). And, of course, as I've run more and lost weight my shin splints have completely dissapeared.

When I had them, I only ran 2 or 3 times a week, and iced my shins immediately after each run. I also worked on calf muscle exercises and stretching during my day.
