Which type of bike is best for a nice cardio workout

I have been riding daily and started with a cruiser and now I am riding a trek. The trek is working however, its not mine and needs some TLC. I heard that a Giant is a great bike and so is a Trek, just looking for some other opinions.

Hubby and I both just bought Specialized. I got a Vita and he got a Sirrus. He test rode a giant and the Specialized and liked it better. Go to a good bike store (or more than one) and do some test rides to find out what fits you best :-)0

I wrench professionally on both Trek and Giant -- and both can be quality bikes. Like most brands, they have models which vary from pretty inexpensive to as much as you want to spend. Here's a decent one that I've had some good experience with: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/town/fitness/fx/7_3_fx_wsd/
Of course it depends on what's in your budget!
For what it's worth: when I go on RAGBRAI, I see people riding all the way across the state on cruisers as well.0 -
I have a Univega Via Montega Hybrid. It looks like a mountain bike, but it has skinny road bike tires, and no suspension. It's perfect for riding on concrete/ tarmac in urban Los Angeles.
It has 700x23 tires which are very fast, but any bumps or cracks in the road surface are bone-jarring. I bought this thing off Craigslist for $130 bucks, so I can't complain. But if I did buy a new bike, it would be a hybrid, except maybe with slightly wider (and slower) tires.
The bike IC jackson recommends is perfect.0 -
Thanks to everyone who replied on my question.0

I recommend a hybrid bike as they're good for all types of surfaces and reasonably priced.0

The best bike is the bike that fits you best because then you'll want to ride it longer getting in more cardio. At the same speed over the same distance, a heavy mountain bike is more of a workout than a full on racing road bike due to the weight of the bike and it being less aerodynamic. Any bike will give you a good workout if you put the same effort into it. The style doesn't have much to do with it. Get what you'll ride.0

My son has a Giant. It wasn't the most expensive but he is getting good use and minimal repairs. Just the usual. He however is considering a hybrid also. Happy pedaling!0
