I've just bought the polar ft4 to get accurate calories burned when working out, a girl off here on my friend list said deduct 1 calorie for every minute? Do you do this and why? Thanks for reading!

I haven't yet. I'd like to have an hour to just wear it and do nothing to see how many calories are burned at rest so I can subtract that from the calories burned while working out. Not sure if it's necessary, but I'd feel more like I really earned my burns.

Considering that HRM's are only 80% accurate anyway, don't subtract anything and take the number as is.

Also, don't wear it at rest because HRM's are made for exercise only.
  • I burn more than what I've been guessing by about 30-80 calories. Thanks for replies

    I take my number as-is.
  • I don't have a polar, I have an inexpensive sportline and I always subtract 30% and then round down from that number to the closest 50. This theory seems to be working well for me. There are days I barely break a sweat and don't stop for water during a Zumba class and it will tell me I have burned over 1000 calories, yes my heart rate hit 177 a few times but I still don't believe I burned that many calories!

I got the Polar FT7 and just tried it last night. I am planning on taking the number as is. I noticed that the eliptical machines are over by 10-15% compared to the HRM.
