seperated ribs

I have at least one separated rib at my sternum, I did this about 6 weeks ago. I have been doing zumba 2x a week, walking/jogging 2 or 3x a week, and weights 1 or 2x. I have been hurting and then feeling better off and on this whole time. I finally went to see a dr. (my husband made me). Dr. said to only walk for a week or two, I think that will drive me nuts. I have signed up for my fist 5K at the end of October and am afraid I will not be ready. I have never been one to exercise until the last nine months. Now I kinda crave the workout. What can I do to keep up what I have gained in stamina, and fulfill my drive to workout?

As much as it might drive you crazy, taking it easy sounds like your best option. You want to heal, right? So let your body heal. A week or two walking beats months or even years of pain.
Don't worry about the 5K, worry about healing your body.0 -
I did the same thing last year, pushed myself too far and now it still hurts, I can't sleep on my left side and when I work out it still hurts. I should have taken it easy! Take your doctors advice or you'll yell at cereal for being on the top shelf like me.0

My son is a tremendous hockey player. He tried to play through a badly sprained ankle. We brought him to the doctor. The doc said he would have been better off breaking it. Because it would have been in a cast and he would NOT be able to play. But because it is sprained, he will try to play through it.
Moral of the story. Listen to the doctor.0 -

What, exactly, is a separated rib? I have never heard of this. Separated from what?0 -
The cartilage around the rib separated from my sternum. My daughter has had a rib separate off her spine, very painful.
I did go "workout" today. I have been running some and thought I would start C25K, it seemed really easy (of course it was day 1). I told myself that if it started hurting I would stop, it did fine, no more pain that what I already had. I think I will see how that goes. I will do no Zumba, weights, or bleachers for sure.
My Dr., who also is my brother-in-law, said to ice it a lot. So, off for a shower then an ice pack. I am not looking forward to an icepack on my sternum, can't imagine that it will be comfortable.0
