I am very out of shape. When I walk long distance or exercise or something I get out of breath really fast and feel like I am dieing. Any thoughts or suggestions.

I'm the same, it's really hard at first and it takes a while but that's what cardio is all about, I've never been really big but I've never been fit, and before MFP I never did any kind of exercise, this place really opened my eyes to what I need to be doing, when i started it was about a number on the scales, now it's about getting fit!0

Just keep trying. Every day it will get a little bit better. I felt like that at the beginning, and now I clock 8-12km a day and love it.
Remember, it doesn't get easier, you just get stronger.
You can do it, just give yourself a chance.0 -
My dr. told me to start walking if only ten mins at a time. I was in such pain I could only do five mins !! Then I would hurt like crazy. But I kept telling my self one step after the other...next thing I knew I was walking more and more, now no pain ! Just keep thinking one more min than the last time. Don't over do it. It works !!0

4 months ago I could barely walk down the driveway and back without being out of breath. I just made up my mind I could do this. I would go to the next set of mail boxes and back. Then I was going farther and then back. Nice and slow. easy going. My feet hurt like crazy, I was panting and wheezing the whole way.
Now I'm 20 pounds lighter, and I can handle 3 miles or more at a time and walking at a good pace as well. I built up to it adding in a bit more each time I walked. I walk 5 or 6 days a week now. sometimes just a mile, sometimes 3 or 4 at a time. Break it up. 10 minutes in the morning, 10 in the evening. After a week or so, increase the time to 15 at a time. You can do this!
Best of luck to you!
